Chapter 30:- Brother Sister Bonding
Shreyas pov :-
It was around dawn when she finally stirred. Her fingers twitched weakly, and then I heard her soft voice. "Water..."
I snapped awake fully, instantly pouring a glass. She tried to raise her hand, but her injuries made her wince. I quickly slipped an arm behind her back, helping her sit up slowly. "Easy... don't strain yourself."
I held the glass to her lips, tilting it gently. She drank small sips, her eyes closed as though even drinking was exhausting. When she was done, I set the glass aside and adjusted the pillows behind her.
She looked at me then, her eyes watery. "I... I'm sorry," she whispered.
I frowned. "Sorry? For what, baby?"
"For what I said... and the way I behaved. I shouldn't have-" Her voice cracked, and she covered her face with her hands, breaking down into sobs.
"No... no, Nayan." I moved closer, pulling her gently into my lap. She didn't resist. She curled into me, crying like a child, her tears soaking my shirt. My heart shattered into a million pieces.
I stroked her hair, whispering, "You don't have to apologize. You were scared. That's not your fault."
Her cries only grew louder, and finally I asked softly, "Tell me... what happened? What are you so afraid of? What nightmare has been haunting you for so long?"
She lifted her head slowly, her face streaked with tears, her lips trembling. And then, piece by piece, she let it out.
"Mom... and her maya di. They hated me. When Papa wasn't home, they... they used to hit me. Call me names. Lock me inside the basement... dark, cold, no light. Sometimes for hours. Sometimes all night." Her voice shook violently.
I felt my whole body go rigid. My blood boiled with rage. But I forced myself to stay calm for her.
"They would laugh outside," she whispered, hugging herself. "They said nobody wanted me. That even my real mother left me. And when I screamed... Nobody came. Nobody ever came."
My throat tightened. "baby.." I murmured, but she kept going, lost in the memory.
"Bhai was in Mumbai at that time for his studies," she said quietly. "He didn't know what was happening behind his back. I gathered my courage and one day finally told Papa about everything-but he didn't believe me. He slapped me." Her voice broke. "That was the first time he ever hit me."
I clenched my fists, trying not to explode.
"He never showed affection toward me," she continued, her voice trembling. "I always thought it was because Maa wasn't there... because of me. But that day, I saw it-his hatred. It was like Mom and Maya Di got a free pass to make my life hell after that."
Her eyes glistened as she looked away. "I used to cry, scream for him to stop them from locking me in that darkroom. But he never came. The darkroom..." she swallowed hard, "it haunted me. I started fearing darkness itself. When everyone else found peace at night, I was fighting to breathe in the dark."
My chest ached. "Nayan" I whispered again, but she wasn't done.
"Bhai never knew. They behaved so well in front of him. I used to beg him to stay, tell him I missed him, but his studies were important. And then one day..." her lips quivered, "when they locked me in the basement again and I was screaming my lungs out-he came home. He wanted to surprise me."
