Maina stood firmly and intently as her hand maidens attended to her wedding gown, which was made of a silk-like substance that cannot be found on our world.
Her translucent veil covered her face, but even the young women preparing her for what was to happen that day could see that she was not happy.
For that day was the day of her arranged marriage with the leader of the occupation force holding her father's kingdom, Ay-Shinn.
Her species was one adapted to the arid desert landscape of Ardonia. Long pointed ears let out extra body heat like a fennec fox's would. Black marks just below the eyes prevented glare, just like a cheetah's teardrop stripes.
It is also worth noting that Ardonians, being a mostly carnivorous race, had noticeably long canine teeth, which often stuck out even when their mouths were closed. Nevertheless, they were still a noble and handsome people.
Maina herself was exceptionally beautiful, even for her kind. Her face was fine-featured, with acorn-shaped eyes, a small, almost feline nose and thin, pink lips. A fang stuck out of her upper lip, but it only adds to her charming facial features.
Her long, shiny, night-colored hair hung down below her waist, straight and flowing, framing her sinuous body.
Her figure was one that made other young Ardonian girls her age jealous. Her frame was well-proportioned and slim, graceful like a ballerina. Hours everyday spent hunting game in the oases in her desert home gave her a strong and beautiful body.
Sadly none of that helped her now in this situation. Against her will she was being forced to marry a vile creature bent on taking over her home planet.
Just a few days ago an entire battalion of alien spacecraft descended from the red orange sky given off by the light of Maina, the star after which the princess had been named.
Where the invaders came from, no one knew. Perhaps these foul reptilian beings came from the far depths of unexplored space. Ay-Shinn never did elaborate on the origins of his horrendous race.
He gave the king and queen his ultimatum: Let him marry the princess, or watch their very empire that has stood for millennia crumble to pieces at his grasp. There was no known motive for this move by the creature.
Left with no choice, the royal couple were unanimous. They were to prepare their only daughter for marriage to Ay-Shinn.
Maina of course strongly protested against this. Marrying a member of her own species was one thing, but that evil-looking, horrid, slimy monstrosity? That nearly pushed her over the edge.
Even so, her mother insisted that she push through with the marriage. She was worried, not only for the safety of everyone on Ardonia, but for her own daughter as well. She feared he would kill her too if she did not comply.
So here she was, being groomed by her hand maidens, who combed her hair, put the veil over her face and fluffed her gown.
She did not choose this life.
She wanted freedom.
She wanted her opinions to matter.
Not this.
Not marriage to a tyrannical, reptilian creature.
"Leave me," she commanded her hand maidens, and the girls left her in peace.
She was alone in her chambers.
She looked up from her slump at the view from her terrace, a beautiful, exotic desert landscape, suddenly made ugly by the passing of three or more spacecraft piloted by those evil invaders.
The bride-to-be clenched her fist in resolve, and her face got firmer. She was not just going to act as if nothing was happening.
This is her world.
This is her life.
She would not let Ay-Shinn and his forces destroy both.
The princess then walked towards the closet across her room, opened the doors and pulled out a blaster.
This gun resembled a large Terran pistol, but it did not fire bullets. It fired concentrated stellar radiation blasts that can be modified to stun or kill.
Maina eyed the gun for a minute before making up her mind. She placed the weapon under the skirt of her gown, ready to draw it when the time came.
She was ready.
Moments later her groom was waiting down the aisle, a devious grin upon his serpentine face.
He waited patiently for his bride to appear. Whatever his motive was in marrying the Ardonian princess, it was probably grandiose and sinister.
Among the guests at the wedding were high-ranking officials of Ay-Shinn's occupation force. They wielded rifle-like blasters which, like Maina's gun, shot concentrated stellar radiation blasts when fired. They were probably anticipating any sort of betrayal from the Ardonians.
The native sentient species were in attendance as well. King Zoluur and Queen Alleina were there, watching what was to be the fate of their own lovely daughter.
They too, did not want this for her. But much was at stake. Not only their control of the Scorpian empire, but possibly their lives and that of the princess.
At last the time came for Maina to walk down the aisle to the fate which was laid before her.
Ay-Shinn's eyes were up upon the bride as she walked ever closer. He stared intently at she who was to be his mate for life.
She on the other hand, looked back into his eyes. Hers were not of love, nor were they of passion, but of her resolve to avoid the life she was about to begin with this invader.
Midway through the aisle she stopped.
All eyes were on her, curiously wondering why she had paused.
Ay-Shinn himself wondered why she was just standing there. His expression turned suspicious.
Maina's however turned into a glare as she pulled out a blaster from under her gown and fired straight at her groom.
