Update: I recently posted a new Sonic story called To Catch a Falling Star. It's set post-Sonic Frontiers, so expect plenty angst, hurt-comfort, and a dash of found family. If you're interested, you can find it on my profile, so let me know what you think of it when you get the chance!
Back to our story....

This can only end badly, Shadow thought as he stared at the row of luxury homes. He still didn't know what they were doing here, or why Sonic and Manic reacted so sharply to the Montclair family name, but he remembered Sonia mentioning that she grew up in the aristocracy before finding her triplet siblings. Perhaps she still had contacts among Eggman's financial supporters. A double agent could be useful in the future.
There's no easy way out! Sonic's "voice" sang across the sibling mind link, There's no short cuts home!
Manic joined in the song, There's no easy way out!
Finally a song I can agree with, Shadow thought. He blinked when he realized he "said" that through the mind link.
Ha! I knew you'd love 80's Rock! Sonic grinned.
Sonia, on the other hand, groaned audibly. No, not another one. I was hoping to finally have a brother with class.
Says the girl who likes techno! Manic piped up, only to get shoved to the side by his sister. Sonic raised an eyebrow.
Wait, what's wrong with techno?
Shadow shrugged. I was in stasis for fifty years. My taste is going to be older. But even if it wasn't, you can't hate on the 80's. It's an art form worthy of the classics.
You said it, Sonic and Manic jinxed. Manic blinked as the rest of what Shadow caught up to him.
Dude, I keep forgetting you're like fifty years older than us. That's so weird.
Shadow didn't know what to say to that, so he shrugged and kept walking. He noted how Sonic chose to hum under his breath instead of singing through the mind link, earning the stink-eye from his sister. A sigh built up in the ultimate lifeform's throat. His younger brother had a knack for getting under other people's skin, and he had a feeling it would get him into deeper trouble than sibling squabbles someday soon.
"Well, here we are," Sonia announced to the group as she stopped in front of one of the largest homes on the street.
The manor reeked of generational wealth. Even with the smog permanently coating the city, Dresdin House stood unbothered behind its low iron gates. With the sun setting, pinpricks of light could be spotted in the large windows through red curtains accenting the estate's bluish-gray metallic walls, providing a clear picture of how those who supported the doctor's reign enjoyed the finer side of life.
Shadow hated the house on sight. Sonic and Manic sneered up at it, and even Sonia grimaced. But the princess squared her shoulders back and stepped forward.
"There's a servant entrance around the back where we can get in. But we'll still need to meet with the family in order to stay the night. This will require manners and poise, so Sonic, let me do all the talking."
Sonic put a hand to his chest. "Sis, you wound me."
"With good reason," she snipped back. Sonic hummed, not at all repentant.
"Bartlebutt had it coming."
"I am immensely curious," Shadow commented to Rouge.
The pearly bat grinned. "I know. Big Blue the Hero actively causing trouble for someone other than Eggman? I wonder what the other guy did to deserve it."
