I opened my eyes, tired. It was only 5 o'clock? Wait. I don't have my glasses on. I reached over on my nightstand, grabbed my glasses and looked at the red, digital clock again. 6?! I sighed, not wanting to rush today. I stood up and winced. My back still hurt, but not as much. I took a deep breath and walked over to my dresser. The top two drawers had my uniforms inside of them, which is what I got out. A mid-thigh black skirt and leggings (lace at the top above the end of the skirt), with a long sleeved white shirt and a black jacket to cover it.

My name is Ellain Mackey. I am currently a sophmore enrolled in Winter Crest academy, a place to get a good education or dump your kids off for 10 months of the year. I fall into the second category. My parents work hard jobs that start at 7 and end at 9, but they didn't want me to be lonely, so after spending half of my freshman year in a 'nice' public school, they had me transferred here.

I walked down the hall, watching as other students ran. "Come on. Class is about to start!" One friend screamed to another. The academy was fully a co-ed dorm, no exceptions. Something about everyone being equal, but it just saves money on space. No one is equal here. As I walked to the elevator, my room was on the second floor, a girl who was running pushed me from behind, making me drop my backpack and the books that were in it.

Turning around, she started to apologize, but just snickered and kept running. I sighed, crouching down and putting my things back in my bag. Things have always been like this. Ever since my freshman year...I pushed the memory away, picked up my bag and headed for the stairwell. No one ever walks down it. These rich kids are too lazy. It's not like I'm not a rich kid, I just don't rely on my parents, anyone actually.

Walking slowly, since I was still partially asleep, I reached the bottom of the stairwell in a minute or two. When I did, I looked at the clock tower, which was just above the gate of the academy. You could see the gate from anywhere in the building. Class starts in a few minutes. I walked, but didn't run. Why run to a classroom where the teachers barely regarded you unless you were in trouble and the students wouldn't let you sit near them?

The academy itself seemed like something between a castle and a college. There were no lockers in this section, because I was still in the dorms. The building was a complete square and was divided in half. The left half were the dorms and the right half was everything school related. Right now, I was between the two, the clock tower exactly at my right. There were only a few people left in this side, either janitors, maids, or lagging couples who just got done making out.

When I got to my classroom, the door had been locked. I sighed. I guess the class has already began. Each classroom was located on the first floor. Each period, the teachers would rotate the rooms and the students stay in them. I'd be stuck out here for another hour. I guess this would be a good time to go to my locker. I walked further down the hallway, near the east exit.

As I rounded the corner of the hall to get to my locker, the worst person in the world decided to make an appearance. Maren...I tried to ignore her, but she smirked at me, making her 2 "followers" look at me as well. "Well, I guess we're not the only ones skipping today." I didn't speak and kept walking. "So, Maren, what's your favorite season?" One of the barbies asked.

I knew it was coming, but my back was still injured, so I couldn't avoid it. "Fall!" Instantly, she swung her foot across mine and made me trip. To top that off, she dropped her 3 pound Algebra 2 text book on my back, making me cringe. I didn't move until they took the book back and walked away, laughing. I ground my teeth together and closed my eyes. Witch...

Slowly, I grabbed my bag, leaned against the lockers and stood up. I walked over to my locker several feet away, put in the combination, and opened it. Right after I put my backpack inside, I heard a door open and turned to the exit. A tall boy walked in from outside, yawning. He looked cute, in a teddy bear kind of way. He had spiky black hair, but it also looked soft and bouncy, if that was possible. He didn't have any textbooks with him. He must be a slacker.

Before I turned back to my locker, he looked at me with a smirk. I ignored the action and faced my locker, looking for the books I needed on the top shelf. I heard him walk down the hallway, but then they stopped. Next thing I know, he's a few inches from me, leaning against the lockers beside mine. He had that stupid grin on his face again. "Hey, you knew around here?"

I shook my head, looking away again. "Really, 'cause i'm pretty sure i've never seen you. I'm Kale." Now I recognized him. He's in my class, but he nearly always skips. There are roomers about him. I've hear people say that he's a bad ass, that he fights a lot, and/or is a player. At the same time, I heard he's at the top of the class, can be a sweet heart and he's gay. Gossip is annoying.

Suddenly, he changes spots so he's to my right now. "So, what's your name cutie?" I continued to ignore him. Obviously he doesn't know who I am, otherwise he'd be treating my A LOT different. "Hello? Anyone there?" He started poking me...on the back. I winced, my long brown hair blocked my face. "Are you okay?" I couldn't help but cry from the pain. Grabbing all of my textbooks, I closed my locker.

Kale moved my hair aside. "Are you...crying?" As fast as I could, I ran for the exit doors, leaving Kale there dumb founded. I've never let anyone at school see me cry and I'm not about to start now.
