"But mom? I thought you never liked working as a housemaid? I thought I was working to give you a comfortable life. How could you?"
"You are acting too surprised. I had always worked. Why did you think I was doing all alone at home? My job keeps me going..."
"Mom, aren't you listening to me? And, why did has to be Williamson?"
"Well, Geneva had always known about me. When she learned Mrs. Williamson throw me out she offered me a job. You were away and barely visited. And, I didn't think I had to give you minutes about my whereabouts?"
"Mom, can you consider leaving this job? At least, think about your condition now?"
"I am perfectly alright. Yes, I have hard days following my chemotherapy session but Geneva gives me a four day leave after each session of chemo. And, even sends me fruits and greetings through his driver. She is so considerate and I am perfectly..."
But Sarah cut her mother's speech in the middle and said, "Why don't you understand it mom? You don't need to do a job. Can't you find other hobbies? You could have explore what you wanted to do with your life. Experiment new things but instead you chose to scrub floors and..."
"Aren't you listening to me? Geneva doesn't make me scrub floors. You aren't even listening me..."
"No, mom, you aren't listening me. These Williamsons are very cruel..."
"You don't have to stoop this low, Sarah. I get it. Now, that you work for a fancy job you don't want anyone to know that your mother scrubs floor for rich people..." Catherine looked sad and hurt and it took Sarah a moment to realize what her mother thinks of her.
"No, no...why would I think that? I am sorry, mom. I didn't mean this. But I don't send you a lot of money to see you still working. This is not what I had in mind for you. I wanted to see you enjoying your life,..."
"Enjoy my life with whom? You never visit me. Staying with my employer all the time doesn't give me any time to make friends at work. Where would a woman at my age would find friends and connectinons. I am happy that you are here now but don't stop me from living my life the way I know. Also, Geneva respects me..."
"Don't do this to me. You know what I am trying to say, mom... I can't see you working..."
"I don't work. I just spend time with Geneva and run small errands for her. She knows about you. Do you know how proud I feel when I get to say around that my daughter has graduated and works for a great company. I get that what you do for living is amazing but my job isn't bad too. I enjoy it and have a place to go to every morning..."
Sarah got quiet realizing she had already done the damage. She certainly doesn't have any reason to give to her mom about her reaction. She couldn't tell her mother the truth so she had to cover her argument with. "I am sorry, I guess I over reacted. You are right. This is what always had been..."
Sarah tried to help her mother get the dishes, but her mother made her feel guilty when she didn't let her do any chores. "You aren't used to this. At least, don't work today. You can help me around the home starting tomorrow."
In the morning, Sarah woke up at her alarm's voice. Only to realize that someone had changed the timing from six to ten. It was indeed her mother. Sarah got out to find the home empty. Her mother had told her that she would join her job tomorrow and Sarah had planned to make a breakfast for her. Instead, she got a breakfast for herself. But seeing the cold fried beacon Sarah couldn't help but feel nauseous.
She microwaved her breakfast after she was done with the morning sickness. She tried to eat it but all felt bland. She opened the refrigerator and took out an ice cream bucket. It tasted amazing and instantly lifted Sarah's mood. Sarah walked out of the home and realized her mom still didn't have any car.
Sarah smiled and wondered if she could surprise her mom with a car. Sarah booked an Uber to the nearest showroom and bought a second-hand Toyota. Sarah then drove the car to her mother's workplace to surprise her. She didn't know what time her mother got off, but she wanted to take her mother to a nice restaurant nearby.
But her car was picked up by the security of the house and one of the guard walked out to ask her what her purpose of pulling the car here was. Sarah tried to seem confident when she told him. "My mother works here. Catherine works here for Geneva Williamson.
"Oh, so, you are Catherine's daughter Sarah,"
"Yes, I am..."
"We have heard a lot about you. Now, that I see you, you look exactly lie your mother..." Sarah gave him a kind smile before asking. "Do you know at what time my mother gets off the work..."
"Oh, you can wait inside if you want..." The guard offered,
"No, I don't have to. I don't want to trouble you..."
"No, it is no trouble. You are an inspiration for a lot of us. I have told my children about you. It is so good to see someone from us at such a great position..."
"Thank you but can you ask my mom to get off work a little earlier today. You will do me a huge favor. We plan to eat outside after that, so..."
"Yes, I think I can convey your message to your mom. You just wait for a minute..." The guard took out his walkie-talkie and was quick to delay the message. In less than twenty minutes, Sarah found her mother walking out of the estate. She looked happy and elated.
When Sarah found her mother walking out she couldn't help but walk out of the car. Her mother slowed down in her pace and asked, "Who's car is this? Did you make quick friends here or what?..."
"Well, I just bought this car for you. I hope you would like my gift..." But Catherine gasped asking her daughter. "It wasn't necessary..."
"Well, now it is done so why don't you try driving it?" Sarah took the keys from Sarah's hand and held her head between her palms before kissing her on the forehead. "You are the best daughter one could ask for. I am so proud of you. But if you think you can buy me such gifts to avoid showing me your face for years..." But Sarah was quick to cut her mother.
"Do not worry, mother. I have come here this time thinking I am going to stay here as long as you are not completely healthy. In fact, I will start working from here as an online employee. This way I can stay here as long as I want..."
And, this made Catherine to beam with joy. "Really? Oh my God, but you don't have to do that..."
Sarah started guiding her mother out of the estate when she heard. "Sarah? Sarah Brown?" And, the voice made Sarah to get frozen in her place. She didn't dare to move around or move an inch. Sarah slowly turned around and tried to keep her expression natural.
"Yes?" Sarah tried to keep some kind of confusion on her face.
"Don't you remember me? I am Robert. Valerie's husband..." Robert extended his hand for her to shake and asked, "What are you doing here? At my grandmother's place..."
"I...I..." Sarah completely lost her voice, and seeing her in such action made her mother suspicious. "Is everything alright?"
