After a month
Sarah was sitting on her toilet, hoping this time the test would come positive. In the last three months, she had gone to sleep with Robert five times. Two times it was somewhere at a resort. Valerie was giving Robert something to compromise his judgment. And, if this test didn't come positive, Valerie was going to make her sleep with Robert again tonight.
One of her friends came to knock on the door and asked. "How long will it take you?"
Sarah rubbed the tears off her eyes and answered. "I am done,"
She hid the strip behind her back, and her sleepy roommate didn't notice. Sarah walked into her bedroom and left that strip on her nightstand before walking out to make some coffee for herself. Two weeks ago, Valerie ran a test to see how fertile she was, and it came back showing she was healthy. Sarah wonders if Valerie would have let her go if it had shown trouble. Or had her killed. She was really scared of Valerie at this point. She didn't know where Leo had gone, but it was better this way.
"I am going away for two days. It is my mother's birthday." Her roommate walked out as she casually started brewing some coffee for herself.
And, this made Sarah miss her mother. She was diagnosed with cancer, and she rarely calls her mom. She wonders if her mom believes she had abandoned her.
If this pregnancy strip shows positive, perhaps Valerie would let her go to see her mother. Valerie owned her by now, and Sarah knew it wasn't going to end well anyway.
Her phone chimed, and it showed Valerie's number. Sarah quickly walked back to her room. Even her roommate looked at her suspiciously. "Is everything fine?"
Sarah looked at the strip and it showed two lines. Sarah didn't know what to feel. She felt nothing. There was an urge to try it a second time but this time she had to answer Valerie's call. "Hello?" Sarah had a stammer in her voice. Sweat beads on her forehead.
"Did you try the pregnancy strip? You have to do it as the first thing in the morning." Sarah heard Valerie but looked at the strip while telling her.
"I don't know what it means, but this time it is showing the two lines."
"Well, two lines mean you are pregnant, right? So, it is a good news."
"I don't know. Sometimes these thigns can be tricky too. Also, I don't feel any different."
"I don't care how you feel. The important thing is that you get pregnant. Get to any nearby clinic and run an ultrasound. I am only letting you off the hook if you are prenant. You know that, right? Or else, you will sleep with Robert again tonight."
"I know, I know..." Sarah replied before adding, "...I will leave right away."
"I don't care when you leave. If I didn't get the confirmation in the next hour I am inviting Robert over and I am not sleeping with that giant."
"Yes, yes,..." Sarah stammered but agreed. She had stopped using her brain. She knew she had to follow Valerie or it would come with consequences.
Sarah didn't know if she could do this again without breaking into Robert's arms and telling him everything about her existence. He was so good to her. He made her feel mattered when he made love to her. But one day, that same man was going to learn how she sided with his wife and ruined his image.
Sarah walked out without changing her night pajamas. She just picked her oversized jacket and walked out. She knew one hour meant one hour. She drove to the nearby clinic and paid for a quick check-up. She was given time after forty minutes. Her leg was shaking the whole time. She didn't want to miss the one-hour span.
"I am in a hurry. I can't miss the shift." Sarah said the moment she stepped inside the observation room. "Slow down, woman. Things like these take time,"
"I just want to know that I am prengnat or not. It shouldn't take much time," Sarah answered back.
"Yes, things like these does take time. You are here to be sure, right?"
"Yes,"
Sarah had her left arm shaking all the time. "Relax," The technician attending her advised.
"I am relaxed,"
"Well, I think,...I think we have a new guest here, congratulations, miss, well, if this what you wanted,"
"Yes, yes, this is what I wanted..." Sarah said but only watched the screen weirdly. She still didn't feel anything. It only felt like the arrival of a new strom. This baby wasn't going to be anything but a havoc.
But recalling how she is running of time Sarah quickly called Valerie. She still had four minutes. Valerie picked on the second ring and Sarah told him holding back a sob. "It is confirmed, I am pregnant."
"Well, good, but I have already invited Robert,"
"What? You said, you said,..."
"Come on, it's been an hour. You know I do what I say,"
"But I still have a minute or some..."
"You don't really expect me to take care of minutes. It felt like an hour. One minute doesn't count much. I got a morning call from my husband and I attended it. Also, this time I am going back to my home. So, it will also give you an opportunity to see my beautiful home. You can't miss on this opportunity, right?"
"Valerie, I...I am not feeling great. Also, I need to go and see my mom. I, somehow, has to give her some explanation about this pregnancy situation."
"Do you think I care? Also, this would be the last time you will ever get to sleep with Robert. So, don't lose this opportunity. And, I hope I don't need to tell you that you can't tell your mom that it is Robert's child just now."
Sarah felt a kind of fury in her veins. She never liked it when Valerie didn't play fair. But there was nothing she could do except remind her. "Why? You said it will all come to an end if I..." But then Sarah looked around to realize where she was. And, it got her to stop talking.
"Girl, I literally own you for now. But don't worry, I won't make you wait longer. I will apply for the divorce in five months. Just the month when it is illegal to abort the baby everywhere in the world."
"But Valerie..."
"Stay ready at nine in the evening. Robert will be home around eight thirty. We will have dinner and by nine I am sure my medicine will work. It makes his vision blurry but he is too deep in his brain fog he rarely notices.
Sarah had started hating her sick voice. "I will be there," It was all that she could manage while getting up.
"Excuse me, don't you want the copy of the image?" The operator asked.
Sarah heard him clearly but didn't stop. She still didn't feel a thing. She didn't feel any joy or fear about this new change in her body. She just felt in a thick, foggy situation that doesn't seem to end anytime soon. Or that was bound to leave her in a bad place. In a really bad place that won't have any way to walk out of.
