The countdown to London quickly diminished; we were leaving in three days. Victoria had come over one day while Jamie was in meetings to help me pack some cute outfits, along with my sister who video called on Skype. Between the two of them, I had options from sex kitten to gym buddy. They were both like giddy school girls, and as much as I tried to play along, I was getting more nervous by the minute. I'd been to Europe a few times, but it was still a foreign country and I'd be at the disposal of his plans for us. At the same time, I couldn't believe I was going to fly across the ocean with this gorgeous, romantic man. I suppose the nerves were also due to the fact that he wanted me to go more than I did, and I wasn't sure why.
I reached over from the passenger seat to grab his hand, giving it a light squeeze, which made him smile.
"Did you like the food?" he asked, as we drove home from dinner.
He'd remembered that I'd said I wanted to try new places, so we'd been asking random New Yorkers for recommendations on their best-kept secrets. Despite some weird looks we'd received, it had turned into a fun game that led us to some interesting finds. Tonight's choice had been an Asian restaurant where the food was on a moving conveyer straight from the open kitchen and you just took whatever looked good. Although the concept was strange, it was the best sushi I'd ever tasted.
"The sushi was wonderful!" I said. "And your orange chicken was perfectly tender."
"I agree. Both were top notch."
It'd become a routine more than a rule that we would share our dishes with one another. A routine I definitely didn't mind because it involved him feeding me from his fork. He'd watch for my reaction, which made me laugh every time, regardless of if it was good or not. He looked like a little boy waiting for some grand expression. I did the same when I passed him something of mine; fixated on his mouth as he decided if he liked it. I'd fed him a piece of sushi from my fingers earlier, and he licked the sauce off my thumb in the process. His charm uprooted feelings that were becoming harder to contain. I masked them with playful giggles, but sooner than later my mouth was going to get the best of me.
He let go of my hand as he pulled in front of my apartment building and put the car in park. He started to step out so he could open my door like he always did, but I grabbed him by the arm causing him to fall back into the seat with a chuckle.
"What was that about?" He looked at me.
"Do you want to come up?"
A sly grin pulled at the corner of his lips. "To your apartment?"
"No, to the Empire State Building."
We both laughed.
"Just for a bit." I added a time constraint to let him know he couldn't stay. Even if I secretly wanted him to, the brain in my head still denied it. Showing him my apartment was a big enough step for now.
"Sure," he said.
"You can park in the garage."
He nodded and drove ahead, pressing the code to the gate to let us in. He parked next to my silver Lexus then walked over to my door and offered me his hand after opening it.
I took it and stood up. "Such a gentleman," I winked.
"How else should one treat a lady?" He rested his hand on my lower back and guided us inside.
I wasn't used to being treated like a princess and it made me emotional. All the years I'd wasted on guys who didn't do PDA or romance, while there were real men out there like Jamie looking for a relationship. I mentally kicked myself for settling, but I was thankful to have him in my life now to erase all of their mistakes.
