"No! Please no! Don't touch me you asshole. Jamie will be here any minute. Jamie...Jam..."
I gasped as a sharp pain startled me from a deep sleep. Sitting up, I quickly forced myself to adjust to the strange environment. Where the hell was I?
I looked down and saw the source of my pain, a swollen bruise on my ankle that I didn't remember getting. Then it registered with me that I was on a bed. In a hotel room. A dimly lit, very cheap hotel room. I could smell the residue of cigarette smoke, and even in the darkened space could tell the walls were caked in yellow stains.
My eyes finally cooperated and I realized there was no one in the bed with me, nor was there anyone in my peripheral vision. I was too scared to speak up, so I quietly rose, wincing as my bruised ankle cracked at the pressure of my body weight. There was a high possibility it was sprained. I limped to the bathroom and noticed the door was open and unoccupied.
It was my chance to get away. I knew Brad did this to me. Various parts of the night before came rushing back to me, but I didn't remember getting where I was and I had no idea how I got the bruise. I was halfway afraid to know. But if he was careless enough to leave me on my own, then I needed to seize what could be my only opportunity to run.
I searched the room in a panic, looking for my phone; under the covers, in the nightstand, on the floor, but it was nowhere to be found. Then it dawned on me that it had been destroyed in the last few minutes I recalled being conscious. I wanted to cry. How the hell would I call someone for help? I scanned the desks and nightstand for a phone to no avail. They probably couldn't afford to keep a landline at such a shitty establishment. I knew I didn't have any more time to waste with pointless details when my life was at stake. So I took off for the door.
I stopped as I read a handwritten note duct-taped to it.
You haven't seen the last of me yet.
A shiver ran down my spine as I snatched it from the wood and crumpled it in my hand, tossing it as hard as I could across the room. I quietly exited and tiptoed down the exterior of the building. I didn't know if Brad was in the room next door or what kind of other creeps the place attracted.
I considered going to the front desk to call the police, but I didn't want to risk having to explain myself to the clerk, further stalling my escape. I needed to get far away before I acted.
I hobbled down the sketchy road as strangers stared me down while I passed through. It seemed to be late morning. The sun was hot and the humidity in the air suffocated me, or maybe that was the fear. Either way the limping was hard work and the muggy weather combined was causing me to sweat. I needed water. I was all of a sudden very aware of how parched I was. I didn't want to know why. I wanted to get the hell out of wherever I was and find Jamie. I needed him to hold me and kiss all the terror away.
I walked for what felt like fifty miles, but was surely only two or three. I found a diner with only a couple of cars in the parking lot, so I decided to chance it. I needed water and a phone ASAP.
