I was feeling defeated. My mom, sister, Brittany, Nakia, and Victoria were dress shopping with me in Ohio and I'd had zero luck. Jamie and I decided it'd be easier for the girls and me to get our gowns closer to where the wedding was instead of having to transport them from New York, risking a disaster.
Surprisingly, my bridesmaids were the easiest people to please, and they'd found a style in our color at the first store we went to. Watching them try on various dresses, it began to register that we were there for my wedding. No longer was I shopping to be in someone else's, I was shopping for mine. However, my anxiety over not being able to find the 'perfect one' was quickly rising. I was annoyed, but I knew once I did come across my dream dress reality would set in; I was finally the bride. A title I wasn't convinced I'd wanted...until I met Jamie.
"Honey," my mom said to redirect my wandering thoughts. I looked over from where I stood in front of yet another rack of white fabric.
"What about this one?" She pulled it out and I immediately shook my head.
"Too bulky," I said.
She politely nodded as my sister stepped up beside me.
"Nothing says we have to find one today," Emily reminded.
"I know, but," I sighed, "I was hoping it'd be easier."
"Just breathe, don't rush into buying something that you're not in love with. You'll regret it forever when you look back at pictures. Never settle."
I half-smiled, she was right. I wanted it to be perfect for me and for Jamie, and I wouldn't accept mediocre. "Thanks, sis."
All of my bridesmaids chipped in to help narrow down my selection by holding up various options. I was grateful to have them by my side, because they were patient and understanding when I continuously denied their picks.
On the contrary, I wasn't very pleased with the staff at the store. There were only two women working, and the one was busy helping another group of women. The lady attending to me wasn't attentive at all. She'd offered us all a drink when we'd first arrived and hadn't said more than three words since. I tried to remind myself she was likely giving me space to look through what I wanted, but part of me couldn't help thinking she was mad my girls had found a bridesmaid style elsewhere. It was uncommon to split the dresses up between two shops and she'd lost out on their money; however, they all looked too perfect in the one they'd agreed on and I couldn't tell them no.
Unlike the other stores, the woman tending to us didn't ask me any details regarding the wedding. She'd had such a hands off approach that the longer I thought about it, the more I wanted to leave and wait another day for another store.
I heard my mom gasp, bringing me back to reality once more. When I looked up, all of my friends and sister were standing beside her in awe.
"Kels, look," she whispered.
I walked closer as she retrieved the dress from the rack and held it up. My eyes widened and my heart began pounding; that was it. The exact style I was set on. It had a lace V-neck that lead to the back, which had a line of buttons trailing down the center, holding the delicate lace together. The dress had a silk lining and was fitted through the waist to where it flowed freely down into a mid-length train.
