A light, sweet aroma filled my subconscious as I slowly drifted awake from my slumber. Our bedroom was bathed in pale morning light and when I rolled over to face Jamie, I was greeted with only the imprint of his departed frame. Stretching my limbs, I nuzzled the scent he'd left behind on his pillow, noticing that it was already cold, which meant he'd been up for awhile. I quickly wondered what time it was and if I'd slept in later than usual. Checking my phone I was relieved to see it was only 9:15. He must've been eager for our departure to Ohio.
We'd been home from the UK for what felt like mere minutes, even if it had been a couple of weeks. It seemed as though the two of us were always on the move, but I didn't mind. As long as I was with Jamie, we could spend every week in a different city and I'd be satisfied. Besides, I liked constant change and that we didn't lead boring lives. Keeping variety in our routine would hopefully continue to deepen our relationship and bond.
Per my request, Jamie had spoken to his ex on our behalf to tell her about the engagement. He seemed relaxed upon his return, and promised me it went smoothly, so I didn't press him for details. He didn't mention anything about Leo's intrusion either, which gave me some relief that maybe she'd gotten the message loud and clear without wanting to drag Jamie into it. I wasn't entirely comfortable in her company, but I would tolerate her and be cordial for his sake and his daughter's.
And his daughter was absolutely confused on what us getting married meant. He'd tried to explain to her that we were going to be a family, but it was all over her sweet little head. I wasn't offended, because I understood a toddler couldn't grasp such an adult concept. Plus her telling me she loved me meant we'd already crossed the hardest bridge a stepparent faced. We'd gotten along easily from the first moment I met her. I prayed I would be a positive addition to her life, because I was going to love being her friend and stepmom.
The smell of maple syrup began to fill my senses and I excitedly threw back the covers, and slipped into my robe, keen to find out what my handsome fiancée was up to. As I made my way toward the kitchen, the scent of sweet dough and caffeine grew stronger. I smiled widely when I turned the corner to see him standing at the stove, spatula in hand, and his black sweatpants hanging loosely on his hips. Even sideways I could see the outline of his perfect V. I licked my lips as a reflex and he must've sensed my presence because he met my gaze with a bright smile. The smile that made my heart skip a beat.
"Morning, sunshine," he said.
"Good morning to you, fiancée." I winked, causing his grin to somehow widen.
"I love how that sounds," he replied, looking at the stove to turn down the heat.
I stepped up behind him, wrapping my arms around his bare torso before he could react. Closing my eyes, I rested my cheek against his muscular back and breathed in his fresh scent, relishing in his warmth.
He grasped my arms under his, tightening my embrace momentarily before spinning himself to face me. Without missing a beat, I reached up and pulled his face toward mine, latching onto his lips.
He hummed against the contact as he slowly walked me backward until I bumped into the counter. His hands left my waist and I heard the shuffling of dishes and papers behind me then he gripped my hips, lifting me onto the cold surface.
