Hiccup and Valerie are currently back in the forest where they saw the dragons, Gobber's words still on their minds.
"So, why didn't either of you?" Hiccup muttered, as he picked up a piece of the cut-up bola.
"Are we crazy for coming back here and looking for those dragons that nearly killed us?" Valerie questioned. "Even if the white dragon seemed neutral?"
"We're always crazy." Hiccup shrugged.
"...Okay, good point." Valerie nodded.
Hiccup puts down the bola as he and Valerie walk to where the two dragons flew off. They went through a rocky crevice and followed it to find an isolated cove, complete with a pristine spring pool, as they looked around, but they didn't see the dragons anywhere.
"Well, this was stupid." Hiccup muttered, as Valerie's eyes drifted to the ground before they widened.
"Hiccup, look!" She said, crouching down and picking up some black and white scales. "Dragon scales, this one is black as the night, while this one is white."
"Well, that's the point of the whole 'camouflage at night' part." Hiccup said. "Not sure how the white one does that, though."
Suddenly, the black Night Fury flew past them, making the twins fall backwards. However, it looked like the dragon didn't notice them as it struggled to climb the walls. It flaps its wings violently, then peels away to a rough landing. Recovering from their shock, the two of them slowly and quietly moved towards some nearby rocks to get a closer look. The white Night Fury flew down to where the black Night Fury landed, it nudged its wing and warbled, as if to tell it to try again. They watch as the black dragon leaps into the air and tries to fly again, but ends up landing on the ground again as well. Valerie then quickly pulled out her leather-bound book and charcoal out of her vest, and started to draw the white Night Fury.
"I'll sketch the white one, you sketch the black one." She quietly whispered, and Hiccup nodded in agreement, pulling out his book and charcoal.
The two of them quickly draw the dragons. Hiccup watches as the black Night Fury repeatedly tries to fly and climb out of the cove, but it ends up falling onto the ground. The black dragon rolls back to its feet as the twins finish their drawings of the dragons. Hiccup looks at his drawing in confusion.
"Why don't you two just...fly away?" He muttered, as he watched it fire at the ground in frustration, then Valerie noticed something.
"Hiccup, look at the black one's tail." Valerie pointed at the black Night Fury's tail.
Hiccup adjusted his drawing, carefully erasing one half of the dragon's tail. The black Night Fury tries to fly again, but fails as it lands near the water. It spots some fish in the shallow water and snaps at them, but comes up empty as it lower his head, looking weakened, as the white Night Fury dragon went next to it. Realization struck Valerie, and a wave of guilt washed over her.
"We did that...the black Night Fury's tail fin must have been torn off when it crash-landed after we shot it down..." She said. "That's why it can't fly away."
Her statement then made Hiccup feel guilty as well.
"Yeah...and the white Night Fury is still here because it doesn't want to leave it behind..." He added.
Hiccup then accidentally drops his pencil, as it rolls off the rock outcropping that hides them from view and bounces into the cove, alerting the two dragons to the two humans' presence. Causing the two dragons to look up to see Hiccup and Valerie, as the red-haired girl hits her brother on the shoulder.
"Hiccup!" She quietly scolded.
The twins then turned to look at the two dragons, who were now staring back at them. For a moment, no one did anything as both sides stared at each other with curiosity.
