ROSE'S POV
Seconds pass with silence before I head rustling in the bushes behind me. I dare not turn my head to see, instead I step backwards into a nearby bramble and watch as the manly figure stalks across the riverbed, his combat boots digging into the soil. I have one chance of beating him. Tackle him with the element of suprise. The hooded tribute wouldn't see it coming. Or, I could run the other way and pray he wouldn't catch me.
First option.
I steady myself on my toes, ready to leap. My eyes fix themselves into his backpack. As I spring into him, knocking him into the river, I fall back into the riverbed with his backpack, straps ripped from my weight. I her a familiar scream. "Help, Rose, help!"
"Jay, be quiet! It's like four feet deep!" His head bobs under the water.
I see a cloud of red.
"Jay!" I yell, diving under the stained water.
My eyes sting  underwater but I keep them open with all my might. I see something huge under me, attached to Jay's arm. I see razor sharp teeth digging into his flesh, tendons and muscles hanging out like little strings. I feel vomit burning my throat and swallow it down, leaving my mouth dry and distateful. I grab jays hand and watch as a fin slaps his leg. Ouch. What are these things?
Fiery eyes tun to me. The creature has a round, horned head, large find and a long, muscular, scaled body. Genetic mutations. My head begins to swirl as my lungs gasp for air. I pull harder on Jay, another  cloud of blood drifts into my face. I scream inaudibly, tears seeping into the water. Bubbles cloud my vision as we both hit the bottom of the river, the mutation passing over us, blocking the final visions of the sun.
