SAM'S POV

No it couldn't be.  I hadn't seen him in who knows how long.

John.

He was one of my father's childhood friends.  My dad always told me stories of what him and his best friend did when they were younger.  I got to meet him once.

I was six when I came home from my run with my 10 year old cousin Fabien.  He was like the brother I never had while growing up.  He always looked after me and always protected me no matter what.  He had just dropped me off at my home when I walked in and smelled an unfamiliar male wolf.

My father came to the door when he heard me enter.  Behind him was a strange looking man with dark hair and kind green eyes that watched my own.

"Sam, I want you to meet my old friend, John.  He came to visit once his schedule finally cleared.  He's been too busy lately to hang with his best friend," my father said as he smiled at the man and gave him a friendly punch to the shoulder.

I could see by the way my father looked at John that he respected him and trusted him fully.  John crouched down in front of me so that he was my level and held his large hand out for me to shake.

"Hello Samantha.  Your father has told me all about you.  You're a special little girl and I can tell you're going to grow up to do great things," he looked at me with admiration and awe as I just stared at him as if he were crazy, not moving a muscle.  "Sorry, dear.  I forgot that you don't really know me.  Call me John or Uncle John or whatever you prefer.  I've known your father for as long as I can remember and can promise you that I mean no harm to your family or pack.  I wish I could get to know you more, but I must return to my pack by tonight.  Just know that if you ever need anything you can come to me.  I swore to your father when you were born that I would protect you should there ever need be."

With that he stood and headed back to my father's office with my father in tow.

That was the only time I ever saw him, but I continued to hear of him.  We even talked over the phone some times.  Even though I never saw him he grew to be like another father to me.  He would always give me advice when I was too embarrassed about something to ask my dad.  The last time I talked to him I was 9 still.  It was just before my 10th birthday when he called on the phone.  He had told me that he was wishing me an early birthday because he was going on a vacation with his mate.

We talked for hours just about anything and everything new from the last time I talked to him.  After a while though I grew tired and decided that I was going to bed so I said good night and ended our call.  That was the last time I ever spoke to him.  I never bothered to look for him when I was on the run because one, I had Darkness tailing me, and two, if I went looking for him I would be putting him and his pack in danger.

Seeing him in front of me now had all of those phone conversations rushing back.  How he would give me advice about my dad when I felt bitter towards him.  How he always sounded so caring and understanding when I would cry about how my friends did something mean.  And how he always made me laugh by talking about my father and the things they did as pups.  I looked up to him when I was younger and I found that seeing him made me realize just how much I missed him over the years.
