Sam's POV
I slowed only when I saw Skylar. She sat on the edge of the lake dangling her feet in watching the water ripple. She sat just staring. Not moving at all.
I remembered when she was so short her feet were barely submerged. Now the water was up just below her knees. She looked so grown up sitting there now nothing like when she was younger.
"Come on, Sammy, I want to go in for a swim."
Her ever bright smile was on her face pulling me to do just as she asked. Truth be told not much persuading was needed.
But that was years ago. I decided not to say anything. She would talk when she needed to so I just sat beside her soaking my own feet in the water as well.
It wasn't long before Sky spoke.
"I always thought it would be different. I knew from the start that you were my brother's mate. I could tell by the way you asked about him and how you always cared." I had no idea where she was going with this. "I thought that once you came back to stay that it would be simple. That you and my brother would be like any other mates and hit it off immediately. I didn't realize that it could be any other way."
How do I respond to that? How was I suppose to respond when there was really nothing to say.
She didn't ask a question, it was just a statement and opinion. I knew what she was talking about because after I first met Dylan I was as naive as her. I thought that once I came back everything would magically be gone and I would only have to worry about my mate. Fate had other plans though. I hadn't even been here for two full days and I was farther apart from my mate than I ever was in the four years since I met him.
"Sky, where are you going with this?"
As reluctant as she was to go on she spoke anyway.
"I wish you weren't my brother's mate." I couldn't stop the sharp intake of breath. She acted as if she didn't hear. "If it were anyone else they would have caved to whatever my brother wanted and he would be happy. If it wasn't you I would have never known that mates could be anything but loving to one another. I wish everything was different and nothing bad touched my pack. You told me that you had to stay away because Darkness followed you and you didn't want to cause the pack trouble. Well guess what Sam, you did just that anyway. The pack doesn't know what to do anymore, they havn't since you came back. As much as you may not like to think that way it's the truth."
I couldn't say anything because I knew she was right. If I had just stayed away the pack would be just fine. They would still have their Alpha and he wouldn't hate me.
"I'm going back. I'll be fine walking alone."
With that she stood and left.
How had it come to this? If I were being honest with myself I would admit that she just hurt me more than anyone else had in a while. Skylar, the sweet girl who always thought of others, just told me that she wished I had never run into her pack.
I had made up my mind just as Joey walked up to my side.
"Are you alright? I thought something was wrong."
"I'm fine but can you do me a favor and go into the pack house up to my room and grab a silver box for me?"
He managed to smother whatever curiosity he harbored and nodded. He was smart for not questioning me right now. I didn't know how much more I could take before I exploded.
So we walked back to the edge of the clearing where I climbed a tree to wait. I refused to let anyone know I was near so my scent was masked and I sat silently, watching anything that moved. I could see into one of the windows on the top floor.
Through it I could see Skylar sitting on her bed writing. I'm not sure what she was writing but I didn't care to find out at the moment.
I saw an open window on the bottom floor and could faintly make out two figures. Dylan and his father sat on the couch talking. If I wanted to I could eave drop but I feared that they would say something that I didn't like. I didn't need another thing to worry about.
After a short time Joseph walked back out and made his way to my tree. For being a large guy he did an excellent job at being quiet while climbing.
"Now what?"
Maybe it was the wrong choice but at that moment I didn't care.
"We're leaving. I need to figure some things out before I can come back."
I was about to turn and leave when my wolf made me stop.
Leave a note. He needs to know that we weren't taken and that we are safe or else he will come looking for us.
I was surprised that she was even allowing me to leave. It was after all her mate too so I knew that it pained her to be away from him. However, she was right and he needed to know not to come look for me.
"Samantha?"
Joey was looking at me with a questioning look. I wouldn't blame him though because I had practically jerked to a stop when my wolf started talking.
"Just hold on a minute. There is something that I need to do before we leave here." Although he didn't need one I felt that Joey deserved an explanation. "If we were to leave without saying anything Dylan would assume the worst and come after us. I don't need to worry about him being on my tail."
The pack also doesn't need Dylan going crazy worrying about me, I added silently.
I took a tissue out of my pocket and a black sharpie from my pocket. I wrote Dylan a note saying that I was leaving for a few days and that I would be back.
Then I took and arrow out of the quiver on my back and took my bow that was on my back from earlier as well. I speared the arrow through the tissue so that it stayed. Loading my arrow I aimed into the open downstairs window. Careful not to hit anyone I let go and let it fly. It hit the wall cleanly with no casualties.
I quickly turned and grabbed Joey's arm. I pulled him with me until I got to the end of the branch. Then I leaped to the next tree and on our way we went. We swung from tree to tree to mask our path as best as we could. Any wolf below wouldn't hear anything other than what they would think of as a squirrel.
It wasn't long before we crossed the pack's border.
