Dylan's POV

I was sitting on the couch talking with my father.  It had been a while since Sam took off with Skylar and I was still being reprimanded by the old man.  That giant ass Joesph had already attacked me as  so called 'punishment' for disrespecting Sam.  Wasn't it enough that I was left with a black eye regardless of the fact that it would heal within the hour?  It turned out my father had quite a lot of respect for my mate and wouldn't tolerate me being an ass to her, as he so kindly put it.  So that's how I ended up sitting here with him repeating practically the same thing over and over again trying to nail it through my head.

"I was best friends with Samantha's father.  He was like a brother to me.  I know for a fact that if he were still alive he would have you with your tail between your legs and your head under your paws if he knew you were hurting his little princess.  She was so sweet when she was little.  Adorable.  I only met her once but I would have protected her at all costs.  She was so innocent and I remember when she needed advice and would talk to me on the phone.  Her father isn't here so now I am going to make sure you know the rules.  She is your mate, respect her as she deserves.  That girl is going to do a lot in her life and she's going to need someone to stand next to her.  She needs someone who can take all of the pain away, even if it is just for a while.  I don't want to see you hurting her anymore or else you will deal with me.  Understood?"

"Understood."

My voice was full of resignation.  I truly didn't mean to upset her again but when I saw that rogue standing near her I couldn't help it.  I wasn't even aware three rogues had managed to cross my border until my father called me back to the pack house.

I had been outside in the woods on the opposite side of territory trying to clear my mind when I was called back.  When I made it back to the pack house some of the men were cleaning up the two dead wolves and Sam had already taken off with the third.

I had questioned why I was not made aware that wolves had crossed into the territory but it turned out no one could figure out how they slipped by unnoticed.  My father also told me how she was the first one to even sense them.  To say I was furious would be an understatement.

The last thing any alpha wants to hear is that rogue wolves were able to slip through patrols unnoticed and reach the pack house without any  trouble.  To make it worse, none of my top warriors could sense them even as they neared the pack house.  How do three wolves manage to go unnoticed with highly trained wolves of such a large pack?

Then when she came back and the third rogue was still alive it added to my anger.  How could she bring back a rogue who would have no doubt harmed members of the pack?

I tried to reign in my anger but it was no use.  The alpha in me hated being spoken down to and he would be nothing short of a dominate.  Turned out neither would Sam's wolf.

My thinking was interrupted when the door opened.

Skylar walked passed dad and I without so much as a glance.  I didn't say a word because the girl that just walked through was not my sister.  My sister was bright and smiley and loving.  The girl that just walked through was just a shell.  While her eyes still showed intense thinking they also seemed lifeless.  They didn't hold any of the sweetness and happiness that I was used to seeing.

My father was just as dumbfounded as I was.

"What they hell was that?"

Skylar had always been daddy's little girl and for her to not even acknowledge him had to have hurt.  As much as he tried to hide it I could still see the pain.  Along with the pain though was something that I felt myself.  Curiosity.  What had happened in the short amount of time that had passed that caused her to close up?  What could cause such an innocent little girl to cut herself off from her emotions?
