When Saturday finally came it was the day the class was simultaneously looking forward to, and dreading. Some of them still hadn't figured out what they were going to do. For others this was the easiest choice they could make.
Bakugou had called five of them up, one by one, much like when he was giving them their points. This way they could answer his question, and it would stay a secret what would be made when. He also called them randomly so they wouldn't know the order they were going in.
Now it was Sunday. He had made shopping lists for each of them, as promised, and they were heading to the store with Aizawa, who had somehow acquired a large van to haul the children and their eventual groceries in. He was also there because Bakugou said they needed a white wine to cook with for one of the dishes. So he needed to buy it since none of these children were old enough.
They pull up to the grocery store and the children file out of the van. Aizawa reminds them to be on their best behavior and then tells the kids he is going to grab the wine and head back to the van to wait while they do their shopping, that way he interferes in Bakugou's date thing as little as possible.
Once inside the store, Bakugou had them all grab a cart or basket, whichever they thought they'd need. After all, choosing what you use to hold your groceries is a part of shopping everyone needs to learn.
"Ok, we're going to work from the back of the market up to the tills. Well go along this wall to get to the back, grabbing our vegetables along the way." Bakugou explains to them.
It's the method his father had taught him. It's efficient and makes you less likely to forget something because you're not running around willy nilly.
"Now look at your lists and find the stuff you need. If you need help finding a good one, let me know and I'll show you how to pick good produce." Bakugou says.
Everyone except Midoriya pulls out their lists. Midoriya already knew what he needed. He has helped his mom make this dish a lot. He only needs onions and scallions from the vegetable area. And thanks to shopping with Bakugou before, he also knows how to choose the right ones.
Even without being asked, Bakugou gave the others some tips. Simple things like using the firmness to tell how ripe something is, and feeling the weight to gauge how much of the "meat" is inside. Once everyone had picked their produce they moved along the edge of the store and got to the actual meat.
"Ok, now picking out meat is important. You three, if it looks greyish or greenish, don't grab it. It's going bad. If the plastic wrap doesn't look tight then that means the meat released gasses and is already bad. Don't choose any that has a lot of blood or liquid in it. It builds bacteria quicker." Bakugou says, listing what they needed to look out for.
Kaminari just grabbed a couple rolls of ground beef, silently thanking himself for not choosing something that would have him needing to think too hard on his selection. As long at the outside of the plastic didn't have any holes, and it was in date, he should be good.
They went to the dairy section, after a couple of them did the math to figure out how many cartons of eggs needed bought, and grabbed some milk, cheese, and butter. They knew how to choose those item without needing Bakugou's help. Now that the outside stuff was gathered, they had to head into the aisles.
"Who knew shopping could be so difficult?" Mina says, looking at her cart. She already had a good bit inside. Bakugou had kindly done the math on how much of each item they would need to buy to feed the whole class, and it was a lot more than she had expected.
"I never thought that I would see the day where Mina Ashido complains about shopping." Kaminari jokes.
"This is different from going to the mall." Hagakure says, quickly getting Mina to agree.
"Yeah. This is a lot less fun." Mina says.
"The fun part comes after the shopping." Bakugou tells them.
"Maybe for you. It's a nightmare working with you in the kitchen." Midoriya grumbles.
Memories of Mitsuki watching him when he was younger flashes through his mind. Moments when she had them making cookies together and Bakugou would just shove him out of the way because he was taking too long to mix up the dough. He shakes his head as if to force the memories out of his mind, and looks at the shelf next to him.
"Tokoyami, you need lemon juice, right?"
They continue finding the things on their lists. Contrary to the earlier complaining, they were having fun with the shopping. It felt a lot like a scavenger hunt. Not only that, they were excited to get to make the things that these ingredients were for.
As they were getting closer to completing their lists though, they all were starting to worry about one thing. The cost of these carts and baskets full of food.
"Bakugou, what if we can not afford all of this? Getting enough food for 20 people is quite expensive." Tokoyami asks.
"Don't worry about that. Lunch Rush gave me a card to pay for our groceries. He is the one that usually keeps our dorms stocked with food, and I could have just given him these lists so he knew what to get, but I told him that I wanted you guys to know how to pick out all of the stuff yourselves so you can make it on your own without our help. Naturally it will be cheaper when you're making it for yourself, and I never planned to do this if all of the cost of these shopping trips came out of our pockets."
The five of them were surprised by how much thought Bakugou had put into this once again. They definitely were not going to complain about it though. Instead they just proceeded to checkout so they could get back to the dorms.
At the counter a kind young woman with bright blue hair patiently waited while the kids figured out who would place their food on the belt first. She waved off the nervous apologies and just scanned the groceries. Sure she was curious about why they were buying so much food, but she wasn't going to question it.
Once everything was bagged and paid for they pushed the carts with the bags in them to the van where Aizawa was waiting for them. Their shopping was now complete, save for the massive amount of unpacking they needed to do once they get back to the school.
