Jack grinned as Jax flopped onto the ground next to him.
"Hey, prince," he said, turning and throwing a leg over Jax's lap, his hand and head resting on Jax's chest, right over his heartbeat. "What's up?"
It was rare to get moments alone, recently. Alva was creating a new army, and everyone was in a frenzy to get ready for battle. It would be hard to slip away. Jack felt bad, he really did, but there was nothing left here for him anymore. Jax would move on. He was stronger than Jack.
"I feel like we haven't talked in a while," Jax responded, running his fingers through Jack's mess of curls. He hadn't had to energy to take care of his hair recently.
"I'm scared about the war," Jack whispered. He was telling the truth. He was scared of doing the wrong thing, of hurting people he cared about- even if they didn't care about him.
"I am too," Jax replied, voice soft. "I'm fucking terrified. But I feel better knowing you'll be by my side, you know?"
Jack's heart ached. "Yeah."
"And," Jax continued, "We'll have something to look forward to."
"What's that?"
"Sit up." Jack did as told, leaning on his hands as he watched Jax flip something cube shaped out of his pocket. He tried to peer through Jax's fingers, but Jax closed his fingers tight around it.
"We're 19," Jax started, looking almost nervous. Jack placed his hand on his shoulder, thumb rubbing soft circles against the fabric. "I know that's young, but after all we've been through, I think we're more mature than most. Well, I guess I only started being mature after I started dating you."
Jack laughed. "Don't know how that happened, I'm a terrible influence."
Jax smiled a little. "Yeah. I know I was a jerk to you, Jack. I was half the reason you were so lonely for so long. And I'm so, so sorry for that."
"Jax, it's okay-"
"No, it's not. And- and I'm gonna spend the rest of my life trying to make it up to you. But, I don't wanna do it from a distance. I- I want to do it standing right next to you. I want to be with you."
"We... Jax, we are with each other."
"No, I-" Jack watched him swallow. "I mean I want to make it up to you sitting next to you on the throne, and I want to make it up to you while standing next to you, in a house together, not a house, a home. I want to be with you for the rest of my life. I..."
Jax sighed, apparently giving up with worlds, and took Jack's hand. He placed the box in it, looking more anxious than Jack had seen him in a while.
"I want to be yours," Jax whispered quietly. Jack could feel his hands trembling as he opened the box, and found a silver band inside, incrusted with diamonds.
"Jax." Jack's voice caught. He looked up at those eyes, those violet eyes that he'd always admired, always loved- first secret, then openly. "Is this-"
"I want to marry you," Jax finished, eyes teary. Jack's own tears spilled over as he surged forward and collided with Jax's body, half-crying, half-laughing.
"Yes," he managed, face buried against Jax's neck. "Yes, of course I'll marry you, you fucking idiot."
"Oh, thank god," Jax laughed, his own tears falling. "It would've been really fucking awkward if you'd said no."
Jack pulled back, and let Jax slide the ring onto his ring finger. "Of course I said yes. It's meant to be."
Then, Jax's lips were on his and he was sure now, that he couldn't leave.
They had a wedding to plan, after all.
Jack let out a ragged breath as he ran. Blood seeped through his fingers where he was clutching his stomach. He was so close. So close to saving them.
A hand grabbed his shoulder and threw him to the ground. Pain exploded in his abdomen, and he let out a broken sob as Jax knelt over him.
"Please," Jack gasped, dots dancing across his vision. "You- you can't die."
"It's either me," Jax whispered. "Or them."
Jack turned his head, saw everyone rushing towards them. Ollie and Gilly, most prominently, facing Alva.
"You are not even an option," Jax said quietly. "I love you. I promise I'll always love you, but you need to be alive."
Jack reached up shakily, his fingers red as they brushed against Jax's cheek. "Please."
Jax leaned down, and pressed his lips to Jack's forehead. Jack felt the tremors running through the prince's body. He let himself close his eyes and believe, for just a second, that everything was okay.
Then the warmth was gone. Jack's eyes flew open, and he forced himself to sit up. His stomach rolled, and bile rose in his throat. He watched as Jax limped towards Alva. Watched as Alva lifted her sword.
Watched as she brought it down, slicing across Jax's neck.
Jack let out a cry, crawling towards Jax as he fell to the ground, limp. Alva smiled, and disappeared. Jack didn't care.
"No, no, no..." He whispered frantically. His stomach curled, and he stopped, his head falling forward as he threw up, his throat burning. He wiped his mouth and kept going.
He couldn't hear a single thing. He felt like he was underwater. He reached Jax's body, and cradled him close.
"It's okay," Jack whispered, voice raspy. He brought his free hand up to Jax's neck. The blood from his wound mixed with Jax's.
"It's okay," he repeated, trembling. He stroked Jax's cheek. It was cold. "You're gonna be okay. W-we'll get help, and you'll be alright. Just- just give me a second."
He was just turning around when he felt fingers rest on his shoulder. He flinched away, pulling Jax with him.
It was Alva. She was back and she was gonna kill everyone again and he couldn't let that happen. He snarled at the figure standing before him.
Alva was saying something, but Jack didn't care what it was. He pulled Jax further away. He felt dizzy, and blood was coating Jax's side. Jack wasn't sure why, because Jax didn't have a wound on his side.
He shivered. It was getting so cold. Was it always this cold in September? For some reason, he couldn't quite recall. He looked down at Jax again, and kissed Jax's cheek. "I'll protect you, don't worry. We have to plan our wedding, remember?"
Jax nodded, smiling up at him. Jack smiled back. "See? You're just fine."
He felt oddly weak. He hadn't slept in ages, he should rest. There wasn't anyone around anymore. He laid Jax down. "Let's just take a nap, okay? Then we can find the medic's station."
He rested his head on the prince's chest, and let out a breath. He could hear voices faintly, somewhere distant. He opened his eyes, looking around. He had to keep Jax safe.
He saw no one.
He closed his eyes, and laid back down again. Soon, him and Jax would find safety. Soon, everything would be okay. They were meant to be.
Everything was fine.
