Chapter 11
Warm fingers were trailing down my cheek, sending tingles up my spine. I shivered and opened my eyes. Liam was staring at me with intense dark green eyes that were filled with adoration. What was going on between us now? Did Liam have feelings for me or was our kiss just a moment of delusion? The thought of him rejecting me and saying that we were just friends hurt me so much more than I expected. But wait, the look in his eyes must mean something, right? I held onto that thought, hoping against hope that Liam might actually like me.
“Good morning Buttercup.” Liam whispered hoarsely. I smiled down at him, still not comfortable talking as much as normal people do. With that said, I do need to ask my best friend a very important question.
“Morning.” I greeted, staring down at the hollow of his throat and refusing to meet his eyes. Swallowing my nervousness, I asked tentatively, “Liam, what’s going on with us? Are we a couple or was last night just a mistake?”
I heard a sigh, and could feel Liam running a hand through his hair, disheveling it. “B.” he softly said. A hand was placed under my chin and forced my head up, but I stubbornly refused to look into his eyes. “Please look at me.” he pleaded. I shook my head slightly and I heard another sigh float through the air. “I don’t really know how to say this so I’m just going to wing it. Buttercup, you are so amazing. You are beautiful, and nice, and sweet, and-and just perfect!” I finally met his eyes, but while his were now filled with nervousness, mine were filled with disbelief. My stupid and uncooperative heart soared, and I tried to rein it back in. “I really want to be with you, but I don’t want to ruin our friendship. If you don’t like me, we can just be friends and I’ll never do or say anything to make it more than that. But please, just at least consider being more than friends, because I really like you.”
I closed my eyes and pondered the consequences of this new development. I could tell him how I feel, but that would put my heart on the line and I’m not sure if I’m willing to take that risk. On the other hand, if I tell him that I don’t like him, I could look back on it later and regret it. My brain has come to a stalemate so, for once, I let my heart decide.
Opening my eyes, I saw that Liam was a picture of pure nervousness. “If you break my heart, you’ll regret it.” Upon hearing my words, his whole face lit up like a little boy at Christmas. He gave me a swift kiss and I was left breathless while he let out a loud whoop.
When Liam calmed down a little bit, he asked, “Will you be my girlfriend Buttercup?”
I gave him a big smile and exclaimed, “Yes!” I sat up, pulling him with me, and threw my arms around him in a hug. He laughed and wrapped his arms tightly around me too.
