“What do you mean you are leaving?!” Carollena shouted at me as I raced around my room and tossing anything and everything I thought I would need.

To be honest, Carollena’s voice was starting to get on my nerves and I was seconds from yelling at her like a crazy person that belonged in an insane asylum -- Lord knows I felt like that was where I belonged.

Looking over my shoulder, I saw Carollena leaning on my door frame with an annoyed look etched on her face. “It means exactly how it sounds, Carol,” I replied using the shortened version of her name.

Even when I looked away, I knew she was glaring at me for my vague answers and the way I used the nickname she loathed. “Anna, what did the doctor tell you? What did that detective, Max, tell you? Please for the love of Monkeys, what is going on?!” She hollered out at me for the millionth time.

I threw a few more items in my bag and then zipped it up. “I can’t tell you,” I muttered and then pulled my phone out of the charging dock.

I heard the sound of Carollena’s stiletto heels as she walked more into my room. “Anna, what the fuck is going on?! Don’t you dare say you can’t tell me! I’m your friend! I’m the one that has been by your side, thick and thin. All I want to know is what is going on, so I can help!”

Grabbing my duffel bag from the bed, I looked at her. I saw hurt and anger swirling in her eyes. Shagging, I almost allowed defeat to consume me and tell her everything. But the second I heard a honk from the front of the house, I snapped back into the reality I was now facing. “I love you with all my heart, Carollena. You know you’re a sister I never had-”

“If I mean that much to you, then, please tell me what Max Stride told you after we left the doctor’s office. Or, more importantly, tell me what the hell the doctor told you that had you all shaken up!”

I gave a huff in frustration that Carollena was such a determined woman. “I can’t tell you, it is for your own good that you don’t know.” Walking around her, I exited the room. My hands were mere inches from the front door knob when my phone went off. Deciding to ignore it, I walked outside and saw Max’s black Ford Raptor in my driveway.

Suddenly his driver’s door opened and he came out. Running over to me, he grabbed my bag from me and urged that I hurry up.

I looked over my shoulder, even though my thoughts warned against it. I took in each Tuscan brick of the house before me, trying to remember how it looked and the smell of the fresh air that surrounded me.

Truth be told, I didn’t really know if I would ever see the home facing me agian. Leaven’s plane was going to touch down any minute now and without a doubt he was coming straight for me. See, that is where Max comes in. He has promised to protect me; little does he know he’s not just protecting me, but my unborn child.

Looking at the front door, I saw Carollena leaning on the door frame. I saw that she was having an internal battle of marching over to me and forcing me back in the house, or letting me ride off with Max. It was all evident in how she kept leaning forward, as if to come towards me, but the moment she did so, she would immediately lean back.

I gave her the best smile I could muster at the moment. My hand went up to wave, but the second I realized that wasn’t the right notion, I dropped my arm. I knew I couldn’t let her see that I was leaving for good. The less she pieced together, the better.

My body turned, without thought and I started to take slow steps towards Max’s car. Every step felt heavy, almost like my feet where cinder blocks unwilling to move. Biting my bottom lip, I looked up to find my father standing on his porch stairs.
