I walked in my front door to hear shouting from upstairs. I cautiously walked up them. My stairs lead straight to an open room which we use as a “Playroom”. It includes a shelf with about a thousand board games, a big screen TV with a stereo system and all, an X-box 360, a Wii, a PlayStation and a DVD player. It was a pretty big room with a couch in the center facing the television and lots of different colored bean bag chairs randomly placed. The walls are white, but far from colorless. The white walls were splattered with about fifteen different colors of paint. I remember painting it with my parents and Ethan when I was little. Basically we each got a paint brush and started flinging paint at the walls.
“DUDE! What the FUCK?!”
Sitting on the couch being entranced by the television screen was Ethan, Greg, Parker, and Cole. They were playing Call of Duty and hadn’t even notice me walk into the room.
“Ethan, if you’re not gonna watch the twins, could you at least refrain from cussing in front of them?” I asked gesturing toward the two boys sitting in bean bag chairs mimicking shooting at each other. At the sound of my voice all four of their heads snapped around to look at me before snapping right back to the game.
“Harry, Evan, did you hear what I just said?” Ethan asked the twins, still focused on blowing out enemy brains.
“Yeah! You said fu—“ Harry began only to be cut off by Ethan.
“Hey! No, don’t repeat it! Pretend like you didn’t hear that, okay dudes?” The twins giggled but agreed.
“Hey, Logie.” Cole glanced at me, smirking, of course.
“Yeah, hey Lo!” Greg and Parker chorused.
I managed a smile, “Hey, guys. Jamie’s not here?” I asked, already knowing the answer.
“Naw. He said he had to ‘spend time with his family’, which he didn’t say until after we told him Cole was gonna be here. I love the guy and all – he’s one of my best friends – but he really needs to suck it up already! Cole’s our friend now, too. I mean, come on, we broke up, but we’re still tight. Yet he can’t get over the fact you’re closer to Cole than him.” Greg ranted, shaking his head.
I sighed. “Yeah, I hope he comes around soon... You guys focus on the game, you’re getting your asses kicked. I’m gonna go call the girls and see if they wanna come over for a movie later.” Which wasn’t a lie, I was going to call them, I really just wanted to get out of there before someone noticed my still-red eyes and tear-stained cheeks.
I walked down the hall and into my bedroom. Flopping down on my bed. I rolled on my side and curled into a ball. I stared at my wall. Like all the other walls in this house, it was creatively painted. It was painted much like how my comforter looked. Only the base color of my wall was green rather than white like my bed-spread. They both had lots of circles and rings that were different sizes in teal, brown, white (In my wall’s case), and green (In my comforter’s case). I had awesome circular mirrors above my dresser, which matched the brown of my wall and comforter.
My eyes drifted from the wall to something on my nightstand. It was a picture of my mom and me when I was about eight years old. She was pregnant with Dana at the time and in the picture I’m feeling her kick in my mom’s belly as we both smiled at the camera. I’ve always loved this picture. My mom looks so happy. I would kill to see that smile one more time. I felt tears begin to prick at my eyes again. No, I’ve cried plenty enough for today. I was working on choking the tears back when I heard a knock at my door. Before I had time to respond or wipe at my eyes, Cole opened the door and stepped into the room.
