By seven forty-five, Brendon had stopped feeling like a person.
He was a collection of nerves and adrenaline held together by sheer stubbornness.
He sat in the back of the unmarked car, staring through the windshield at the storage facility on Camden Street.
It looked painfully ordinary.
Rows of metal doors. Security lights. A small reception building with a faded sign over the entrance. Nothing about it suggested that somewhere inside those walls was the answer to why his daughter had been taken.
Or why Sarah had died.
The officer beside him checked his watch.
"Seven fifty-two."
Brendon nodded.
His hands were shaking.
He curled them into fists.
He had spent the last several hours being told what he could and couldn't do. Where he could stand. What he could say. What information could be released. What the police needed him to remember.
But now there was one thing he could do.
He could get the case.
"You're not going inside alone," the officer said.
Brendon looked at him.
"They told me to."
"I know."
"They'll know if they see anyone else."
"They won't see anyone else."
The officer's voice was calm.
Reassuring.
Brendon almost laughed.
Nothing about this was reassuring.
"They have my daughter."
"We know."
"They said eight o'clock."
"We know."
Brendon looked back toward the storage facility.
"And if they don't call?"
"Then we wait."
He shook his head.
"No."
The word came out quietly.
The officer looked at him.
"I've already waited."
There was no answer to that.
At seven fifty-eight, Brendon got out of the car.
The cold air hit him immediately.
He pulled his coat tighter around himself and walked toward the entrance.
Every step felt wrong.
Too slow.
Too loud.
He had the strange sensation that everyone could see what he was carrying inside his chest.
Panic.
Fear.
His daughter's face.
He swiped the access card the police had obtained from the facility and entered.
The corridor smelled faintly of concrete and dust.
Unit numbers passed on either side.
Brendon stopped.
