The footage had been slowed down three times.
It didn't help.
Detective Harris stood in the operations room with his arms folded, staring at the monitor.
"Run it again."
The technician rewound.
The timestamp appeared in the corner.
05:11:42 PM
The apartment building's exterior came into view.
The woman emerged first.
She looked over her shoulder.
Then Abby.
Harris felt something tighten in his chest.
There she was.
Alive.
Walking.
Wearing the same coat she'd been wearing when she'd disappeared.
For half a second, nobody spoke.
Then the man came out behind her.
He looked toward the street.
The woman said something to Abby.
Abby nodded.
They kept walking.
"Pause."
The image froze.
Abby was looking toward the street.
Harris leaned closer.
"She's looking at the traffic."
The technician nodded.
"Probably trying to figure out where she is."
"Run it."
The footage continued.
A grey car pulled up.
Abby stopped.
The woman opened the rear passenger door.
Abby climbed in.
Harris closed his eyes.
It was over in seconds.
No struggle.
No screaming.
No indication that she knew she was being taken somewhere else.
She simply got into the car.
Because she had no choice.
Because the people around her had convinced her she had to.
Because she was thirteen.
"Pause."
The technician froze the frame.
Harris stared at the car.
"Plate?"
The image was enlarged.
Pixelated.
The angle was wrong.
A delivery van passed between the camera and the vehicle just as the grey car moved.
"Can you clean it up?"
"We're trying."
The image sharpened slightly.
Nothing.
"Run the next camera."
The screen changed.
