The first thing Brendon did after the call ended was try Abby's phone.
It was ridiculous.
He knew it was ridiculous.
The phone had been destroyed twelve hours ago. The police had already told him there was nothing usable left on it.
Still, he pulled her number up.
His thumb hovered over it.
Then he pressed call.
The line rang once.
Twice.
Then went to voicemail.
Her voicemail.
Her voice.
Small. Thirteen years old. Slightly embarrassed by having to record it in the first place.
"Hi. You've reached Abby. Leave a message."
The beep sounded.
Brendon couldn't speak.
He ended the call.
For several seconds, he simply stood there with the phone in his hand.
Then he looked at the black case.
He had spent the better part of two years believing there were things he would never understand about Sarah.
Why she'd been taken.
Why someone had killed her.
Why her car had ended up on the Pacific Coast Highway when she'd supposedly been going to the garage.
Why the person responsible had never given them a motive.
Now someone had taken Abby.
And they wanted this.
The same thing someone had searched for three weeks before Abby disappeared.
His stomach turned.
He picked up the phone and called the detective.
"I need you to go back through Sarah's case."
There was a pause.
"We're already doing that."
"No."
Brendon looked at the case.
"I mean everything."
The detective's voice sharpened.
"What are you thinking?"
"I don't know."
That was the truth.
"I just know they knew about this before they took Abby."
He swallowed.
"And if they knew about it before Abby, they might have known about it before Sarah."
Los Angeles
Detective Marcus Hale had been a homicide detective for eleven years.
He had learned that old cases rarely announced themselves when they were ready to be solved.
They waited.
They sat in boxes.
They gathered dust.
They became stories people told themselves they had already finished.
Sarah Urie's case had been one of those.
Until tonight.
Hale stood in the evidence room with the original file open on a metal table.
