Abby knew they were leaving before anyone told her.
She knew because the woman was afraid.
Not scared in the way Abby was scared.
Not the wide-eyed, trapped kind of fear that made your stomach hurt.
The woman's fear was quieter.
Controlled.
But Abby had spent enough time watching her to recognize it.
She was moving too quickly.
She kept looking toward the hallway.
And she wasn't looking at Abby when she spoke.
"Put your coat on."
Abby stayed on the bed.
"Why?"
"We're going somewhere else."
Abby's heart began beating harder.
"No."
The woman looked at her.
"Abby."
"No."
She pulled her knees closer to her chest.
"You said I was staying here."
"I know what I said."
"Then why are we leaving?"
The woman didn't answer.
Abby looked toward the bedroom door.
The man was there.
She couldn't see all of him, just part of his shoulder and one hand against the doorframe.
He was the one whose voice she'd heard before.
The one who never came into the room unless he had to.
He looked angry.
Or worried.
Maybe both.
"We don't have time," he said.
The woman nodded.
Abby watched them.
"What happened?"
Neither answered.
"Did the police come?"
The woman froze.
Only for a second.
But Abby saw it.
Her stomach dropped.
"They found this place, didn't they?"
"Put your coat on."
"Did they?"
"Abby."
"I know you found out something."
The woman stared at her.
Abby swallowed.
"You said they had the car."
The woman didn't speak.
"They found the car."
Still nothing.
"So they're looking for me."
The man stepped farther into the doorway.
"Get her moving."
Abby backed away.
"No."
The woman sighed.
"I'm not going to hurt you."
