Chapter 19: When You Look Me in the Eyes

Demi’s POV

Joe and I walk hand in hand through the doors of the treatment center feeling mixed emotions, we’re both happy that we finally had the chance to take the next step, yet we’re both sad at the same time because he will have to leave in the morning. It feels like his stay went by faster than it should have, to think that I might not see him for another month or however much longer I have to stay here, frightens me. It’s not fair.

We walk to his room wanting some more privacy, he told me he has a few things to give me before we part. I’m a little curious on what he means by that. When inside the room, I sit on the bed smiling up at him.

“Wait right here.” He says walking into the closet of the room, after a few seconds he returns with his guitar. I smile realizing what he’s about to do, I’ve been dying to hear his voice. When he sits down next to me, I notice something on the guitar. There are two bead bracelets hooked around the end of the guitar, when he sees that I notice, he smiles and takes them off the end.

“This one is for you and this one is for me.” He says as I put my wrist out for him to put it on, he smiles and ties it around my wrist then putting his on his wrist.

“I just wanted to get these as a symbol, a promise. A promise that means we’ll never give up on each other no matter what.” He says grinning; I can tell that he’s wanted to give this to me for a while.

“Thank you, I love it.” I reply kissing his soft lips, I then look down at the beaded bracelet and think of how sweet he is.

“You’re welcome, I’m glad you like it. I didn’t know if the idea was stupid or not.” He says shrugging, and then picking up his guitar again.

“I’ve written a lot of songs since you’ve been gone; I was hoping to share a few with you.” He says smiling with questioning eyes.

“I would love to hear them.” I say getting excited; he always did have an incredible voice and wrote amazing songs.

“Sweet, sorry I’m a little nervous so just try to ignore my screw-ups. “ He says looking a little shy which is unusual for him, he starts to strum the guitar taking me back when we used to sing together in his room.

He stops singing and I can feel my heart swelling, the song is perfect and everything I need to hear from him. I hug him immediately knowing every lyric he just sang is true and I don't want anyone but him. Everything's gonna be all right.

After Joe had played me his song, we went up to my room and I got my guitar so we could play together. I showed him some songs, he played some of his for me. It was really great, I haven't played for anyone in a long time and I enjoyed it.

I played this song I wrote for him called My Love is Like a Star that I had been dying to play for him. He said he loved it wishing he could listen to it all the time, I was really happy when he said that. It got me thinking that maybe one day I could record my own songs, I think it would be really fun and I hope I can. I have no other idea for my future other than music.

After we played each other our songs, we started to see if we could come up with something together. We both made some great strums, but when it got later, our lyrics were starting to get goofy and we couldn't stop laughing. Kate then came in after that and reminded us that it was time for bed, I went down with Joe to his bedroom and we got ready to slip into bed.

We both couldn't fall asleep since we wanted all the time we could have together before he had to leave the next morning. We just talked and enjoyed each other's presence.
