Chapter four: Keys and Doors
I was startled from my nightly brainstorm by a light thumping noise in the gravel up front. It got louder and louder, though, and was eventually very loud.
A harsh noise cut through the silence- a crunching, banging sound that sounded as though... Someone was breaking down the door!
I jumped to my feet, hearing my parents do the same in the next room. I heard a gruff voice downstairs calling, "Amelia? Does Amelia live 'ere?" I froze, handle on my bedroom doorknob. My mother stopped in her tracks, but my father ventured forward.
I hate to admit it, reflecting back, but I was scared. I swallowed, plucked up my courage and turned the sliver knob, letting in light from the hall. My dad was already downstairs; I could hear his breathing. A tall, wide, dark scraggly giant of a man stood in my living room, grinning. @@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@ "Who are you?" I asked. If I wasn't me, I would have sounded timid.
"Me? I'm Hagrid, Keeper o' keys an' grounds at Hogwarts. Tha's me."
"Hogwarts? As in School of Witchcraft and Wizardry? As in my letter?" I asked, as it all clicked in my mind.
"Boy, yer quick! Yep, tha's the one." I smiled, but the shock was clear on my face.
"You're telling me that I'm a WITCH?" I asked incredulously.
"Yep." said Hagrid briefly.
"But- that's- that's completely impossible!"
"No' really. Sorta get used to this sorta thin'." he said nonchalantly. I gave a rare, real grin, but the sloppy smile slid off my face like water on a duck.
"Hagrid, I don't have money to buy all my supplies! And where will we get all my supplies? And I haven't responded yet! I don't have a mail owl!" I burst out all at once.
"Hold yer horses!" said Hagrid loudly. "New students get a student loan. From the Ministry an' all. We can find it all in London, If ya know where ta look." he said with a wink of his beady black eye. He then produced a flustered-looking owl out of one of his many pockets. He scribbled a note on a scrap of parchment, tied it to the owl's leg, and basically tossed it out the window. I ran to the window, but the owl was soaring into the sky. Hagrid chuckled. " Don' worry. Always delivers his message, he does." Hagrid said assuredly. I leaned back into the couch.
. "What do you do at Hogwarts?" I asked breathlessly, and Hagrid launched into a full- blown explanation of Hogwarts. It was then, as if in slow motion, I noticed dad looking sad in the doorway. When I caught his eye, he turned and walked up the stairs without a backwards glance. Hagrid was still talking. Two hours later. A/N: Sorry this was such a short chapter, but I just needed to get it out there. Can't wait for Amelia's reaction to Diagon Alley! I wonder what house she'll be in... Comments get a dedication in next chapter! Also, sorry if I couldn't get the Hagrid accent right. I'm working on it, be patient. I'm going to read some of his lines and see if I'm doing it right.
