Chapter Fourteen: A quick mend

I shadowed the Prefect who was levitating Eleanor. A sea of faces looked up from books at us, but I just ignored them and followed the Prefect girl. We left the common room, descended the spiral staircase, and set off at a brisk pace down the winding, torch lit passages of the castle.

We walked for seven minutes, twelve seconds, and 3 milliseconds before we stopped at a set of tall wooden doors. The Prefect knocked on them and a plump woman in an old-fashioned nurse's gown answered, holding a wand and a gold bottle.

We entered a long room lined with iron hospital beds, all neatly made with white sheets. Only one was already occupied with an older student who was intermittently coughing and breathing out orange, ethereal birds, which vanished in a matter of seconds. The woman, who I presumed to be Madam Pomfrey, made a tsk-ing noise and indicated a bed two in from the door.

"Set her there," she said, "and take off those charms while I put away this syrup!"

The Prefect nodded, "Yes, Madam Pomfrey," and began muttering as she lowered Eleanor into the bed.

Eleanor unfroze and came to, groggily. As soon as she was able to move, she grunted in pain and grabbed her fingers again.

"You are excused, Bethany," said Madam Pomfrey to the Prefect. She nodded and left.

"You too, dear," she said to me.

I felt stiff. "Um, will you be able to fix her fingers? They're broken. Well, her index finger and her pointer finger are." I said, rambling slightly.

Madam Pomfrey smiled. "Oh, yes, broken fingers are easy. Now go on, you'll be late for breakfast!"

I nodded and hurriedly left the room, adding the place to the mental map I'd been building of the classes. I hurried back the way Bethany the Prefect and I had come, then turned at the common room to go to the Great Hall.

When I arrived, the room was a sight to behold.
