Chapter Nine: On a Dare
The little genius looked down modestly and dragged her giant trunk to the middle of the room.
"Over here!" I called, beckoning her closer and pointing to a compartment next to mine. She lugged the trunk over to the compartment on one side of mine, a little closer to the door, and carefully set down her trunk.
We looked at each other.
I think we were both socially awkward youths because we sat there for a full three seconds before anyone said anything.
"Hi... I, uh, guess we're dorm mates." I said, desperately trying to start a conversation. She nodded. "You were awesome at the knocker. You totally, uh..." my sentence fizzled out. Slang was a relatively new thing for me.
"I... what?" she asked timidly.
I smiled a bit.
"Sorry, it's just... This whole "slang" thing is new to me." I replied. 'I only took English in theory,' I thought.
She smiled a little, too.
"I think the word is... schooled?" she said. We both giggled, and I nodded. "You weren't bad at the bookcase, either." she said more seriously. "My sister Em said they almost slept in the common room the first night."
I was starting to get used to her tiny, quiet voice.
Suddenly, the dorm door slammed open as a blonde girl burst in, brandishing her wand like a sword.
"Hello, my fine roommates!" she cried in a Shakesperean voice. Yellow sparks shot from the tip of her wand and she lowered it in alarm.
The small genius, whose name I still hadn't gotten, looked a bit scared, but I burst into laughter.
"What?" the new girl said. "It was a dare!"
That just made me laugh harder.
The girl cleared her throat.
"Anonymous, Amelia!" she yelled. "I proclaim thou a....
"Stick of butter!"
I recoiled.
"You proclaim me a Stick of butter?" I said wonderingly.
"No, no! I... I have no idea. Wait! You're name's actually Amelia Anonymous?"
There was an awkward silence.
"Uhh... Not really. I don't actually... Have a last name." I said, trying to indicate it was a touchy subject.
But I was apparently cursed to live in the dormitory of Socially Inept Magical Genius Girls because she asked,
"Why?"
I just rolled my eyes and slid the glass sliding door shut, leaving a thourougly shell-shocked looking small genius on the other side.

A few minutes later, when I felt that the new girl should've gotten her stuff away, I slid the door back open.
I got up out of the compartment and gently knocked on the small genius' compartment. It slid open and she pulled me inside.
"I... didn't get your name." I said.
She bit her lip.
"I'm Imogene." she said in her quiet voice, gently pushing me back out again. "Good night, Amelia." she said.
I hurried back to my compartment. I let myself fall back onto the bed, but only stared at the ceiling for a few seconds before there was a tap on my window.
Aroura was sitting outside, pecking at the glass. I quickly slid it open, allowing the crimson bird in. She landed on my fingers to show affection then fluttered up to a high shelf and promptly fell asleep.
I blew out the lamp that illuminated the compartment, and propped myself up on my elbows. I stared out the window at the twinkling lights of the castle; my new home.
