Chapter Twenty-Four: Pondering and Quiddich

For the next few days, my head was swimming with ideas and snippets of conversation.

I must've seemed like a total mess to everyone else, plodding about and replying "uh-huh" to everything that was said, but I had a lot to think about.

Specifically, what exactly could be in this prophecy that had to do with me. And what Hagrid had been so flustered about. And how to parry all of Eleanor's advances about furthering my nonexistent relationship with Ari.

The latter was really a nag, as I just wanted to think and she could go anywhere I could go.

So the next evening I slipped away. I found a staircase and resolved to climb and climb until I couldn't climb any higher.

Finally, my feet rested on firm ground that didn't quiver beneath my feet.

I looked around, surprised to find an empty room. It was circular and rather short, with windows all around. It was decorated with a dusty Hufflepuff Quiddich banner, couple beaten chairs and a rug whose color had all been bleached out by the sun long before I got there.

I drew my wand in case there was something living in the chair- I'd paid enough attention in Defense Against the Dark Arts to know never to sit in an unused chair at Hogwarts without checking first.

There was, luckily, no inhabitants, so I sat down and rested my head on my chin pensively.

@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@

The first Quiddich match of the year was at 9:00 sharp the next morning, regardless of weather. Thankfully it was clear- the sun glinted off the lake and the forest seemed much less foreboding. But there was a nip in the air, and the morning frost refused to melt. By 8:45, I was outside with a quickly cooling mug of tea, huddled up on one of the tallest benches. Imogene settled in silently next to me.

After a beat of silence, I said, "Good Morning." She nodded and responded with a small smile.

The stadium quickly filled in the 15 minutes prior to the match. I spotted Natalie and flagged her down, taking care to hide from Eleanor.

Natalie was, of course, much more chatty.

"Isn't it a chilly morning? Though it seems pretty nice for Quiddich. Nice and sunny and clear, fog and rain is rubbish for Quiddich, you can never see what's going on and the game goes on forever because no one can find the Snitch and your toes go all numb..." she trailed off. Then suddenly, "Merlin's Beard! This is your first Quiddich match, isn't it?"

"Yeah," I replied, shooting her a warning look. Imogene looked surprised.

"Really?" she squeaked. I nodded. "Wow- Quiddich is so much fun to watch! I love Quiddich! Here, you can borrow my book." she reached for her bag, rummaged for a bit, finally surfacing holding a small green leather-bound book.

"It's my own copy. You can read it."

That was likely the most I'd ever heard her say at once. I made a mental note to bring up Quiddich again.

A loud roar erupted from the far end of the stadium, where the mass of green and silver was mostly gathered.

The Slytherin team emerged onto the field, smiles flashing and dark brooms glinting. The Hufflepuff team quickly followed, and I let out a cheer. Natalie whistled loudly.

Side by side, the teams looked strikingly different. The Slytherin team was all bulk and angles, with shiny new brooms and uniforms and hair, and they were doing their best to shoot charismatic smirks. The Hufflepuff team looked much more rounded and cheery- and not as well matched. Their brooms and uniforms looked well-loved, and it was obvious from far away the uniforms were threadbare and the brooms had gone a while without polishing.

The flying instructor led the captains to shake hands and then the teams retreated into huddles before quickly spreading out across the field.

With a shrill whistle, the players kicked off into the air. Another whistle signaled for two gigantic black iron orbs to be set free, as well as a faint glimmer of gold that quickly vanished. Then the big red leather ball was tossed into the air and the game began.

A/N

Sorry, the beginning was a bit of a filler. I promise there will be a development at the game in the next chapter though! The next chapter will be out in a few days, as well- additional updates so you aren't as mad when I leave for a fortnight to visit the family. (OMG- autocorrect changed visit to idiot XD )

A fortnight, for those of you who don't know, is a length of time that you should immediately google because I'm not going to tell you.

If you'll be sad that you miss two updates, I will give you two (or maybe three?) before I leave and you can ration them how you'd like. :P
