Chapter Thirty-two: Repercussions
The day after McGonagall's announcement was noticeably subdued. All of the teachers gave half-hearted lessons, and professor Flint, Head of Hufflepuff house, reportedly tested up in front of a group of fourth-years.
Professor Longbottom awarded four random Hufflepuffs each five house points for not talking while he was talking, and took three from a Slytherin boy for the opposite reason.
The teachers being lax was the perfect excuse for me to daydream in class. I felt like I was on the verge of a realization. Everything was there- all of the pieces fit- and it was like a word on the tip of my tongue. It would all make perfect sense when I wasn't expecting it.
Either way, I decided I needed some input from outside sources. I stopped Natalie in the hallway and pulled her aside.
"Hey, do you think you can meet me in the library after classes today? Bring anyone who likes that one show you knew about my... you know what I'm talking about, right?"
She laughed and nodded.
"Sure. See you there."
I breathed a sigh of relief and headed on to History of Magic.
Professor Arcturus greeted us blandly as we entered.
"Based on... Recent events, I have decided to cover today the most recent unforeseen tragedy Hogwarts has seen. I am not talking about the War, which I am sure- no, I HOPE- all of you are familiar with. No, I am taking about the Chamber of Secrets.
"Legend has it that Salazar Slytherin himself created the chamber. It is protected by many magical safeguards, allowing only his direct descendants access.
It was opened some eighty years ago by none other than Lord Voldemort-" a gasp- "Yes, the Dark Lord himself. The great monster inside, a Basilisk, was set free upon the school and injured many, finally killing one.
After that devastating incident, the chamber was closed, an innocent man framed for its opening, and regular life continued.
Fifty years after that, the Chamber was re-opened. Voldemort had used powerful Dark Magic to make a girl do his bidding and set the monster on students. Luckily, nobody was killed.
Hermione Granger realized the monster that lurked in the chamber was a Basilisk, and her discovery led Ron Weasley and Harry Potter- as well as Gilderoy Lockhart- he was a bit of a famous wizard in my youth, turns out he was a fraud- into the Chamber. Potter defeated the basilisk with the help of Albus Dumbledore and his phoenix, Fawkes, and the chamber was closed permanently."
Most of the class sat in rapt silence, although a few were taking notes.
"Now!" the Professor clapped his hands. "A quiz on the material! Get out a bit of parchment and a quill,"
his announcement was met with a unified groan.
"It'll be short, we only have a few minutes left of class anyway."
Suddenly, Professor Flint came running into the classroom, robes flying about her ankles, out of breath and wind- swept.
"Hubert- one moment- important-"
"Hold one one moment, class," Professor Arcturus said, holding up a hand. The two teachers exchanged fevered whispers for a moment.
"There has been a- change of schedule. Slytherins, you are dismissed. Return to your Head of House, as soon as class ends.."
The Professor seemed to lose interest in the lesson after that, scribbling madly on a piece of paper and ignoring the murmurs of the class.
"I'm hoping that they're getting a house-wide detention-"
"What if one of them's the kidnapper?"
"D'ya think some Slytherins've been taken?"
Several minutes after the interruption, a Hufflepuff prefect appeared in the doorway, robes askew.
"Headmistress McGonagall would like everyone in their common rooms as soon as dinner ends! And have a teacher escort you!"
Then he disappeared in an uncoordinated swish of yellow and the clatter of running footsteps.
"All right, I'll... Do that," replied the Professor absently, long after the messenger had gone.
Now how was I going to meet up in the library? I needed to think!
I groaned inwardly and held my head in my hands. These safety rules were going to prevent me from reaching a breakthrough. The Slytherin next to me guffawed.
"Sad you won't get'ta go to the li-bary?" she asked in a mocking tone. "Must be turrible."
"Actually, I was," I said with a mild expression. "Got a problem with that?"
The girl looked surprised for a moment, but had a quick comeback.
"What kind of loser spends free time in the library?"
"Shut up, moron," groaned another Slytherin boy behind her. "You make the whole house look bad."
"I was going to say, "I'd rather be a loser than stupid," but I hate to break it to you- your house kind of does that on its own."
I was having a bad day.
"Why, what an excellent way to thank your savior. Just going to throw it out there- not big on "Snakes Pride"."
"Snakes Pride?"
"No, you have to say it with a big gruff voice like a giant fat bear who's also a smoker, like this- "Snakes Pride"."
I chuckled and was about to respond when the bell clanged loudly.
Even though it was controlled by the Professor, he looked mildly startled.
"Oh, all right then, on to your next class."A/N: gearing up to survive another year of HAWKS PRIDE. :/ the next chapter will have PLOT DEVELOPMENTS!
