Chapter 6

3 weeks later

School was running pretty smoothly. I had made friends with Amelia and Stacy. I had also become really close to Kelli. I'd even say we're best friends. The thing is: I hadn't talked to Danny since he started hanging out with Rita. I'd tried, but every time I'd suggest something, he found a way to get out of it.

"Hey, Danny." I said after I walked into first period. Danny had his schedule changed a while back. We now had first period and fifth period together.

Danny looked like he was about to respond to me, that was until Rita walked in. He quickly took his seat without any further looks in my direction.

I continued as if nothing happened and tried to pay attention to the math equation on the board. When the bell rang I quickly walked out of the door to avoid any contact with Rita and Danny.

Lunch

"Hey, Riley." Amelia said cheerfully as she sat down at our lunch table.

"Hey." I responded shortly.

"What's wrong?" Stacy asked setting down her tray next to mine.

"Nothing. It's just, the usual, home work and stuff."

"Yeah, I get it." Stacy replied. And that was the end of the conversation.

5th period

"Hey, did you study for the test." I asked Danny when I walked into fifth period. It was my last attempt to talk to him.

"Yeah, I." He stopped.

I turned around to see Rita and Sammy walking to their seats.

"Sorry, um, I think class is starting, so . . ."

"Yeah, cool."

"Okay." He half whispered and walked away.

I sat next to Kelli as chemistry class began.

"Okay class, today you will be picking a partner and working on a lab."

"What's wrong?" Kelli asked when we arrived at our lab table.

I gave her the same excuse I gave Amelia and Stacy.

"Okay, what's really going on because as one of your best friends, I know that's not true."

"Fine. It's Danny. He hasn't spoken a word to me since he started talking to Rita and we have . . ." I paused to think. Kelli didn't know about Spy Academy and I couldn't tell her. "We have work together after school. I just think it would be awkward."

"Why would it be awkward? You guys don't work that close together."

Kelli thinks that Danny works with me at Lina's Ice Cream Parlor. She stopped by one day and asked where he was. I told her he worked the outside seating area and I worked the inside. That is what she has believed, and hopefully, she will continue to. I don't like lying, but this is a secret she cannot know.

"Yeah, but he usually drives me to work."

"Yeah, okay. How about . . . we have a girls' night. Me, you, Amelia, and Stacy. It will be fun. And we'll forget all about guys friends and popular preps."

"Sure."

"Next Wednesday?"

"Um, I can't. I'm really sorry, but I have to do something with my parents."

"Yeah. Sure. That's what you always say. What's up with you? It's like you can't hang out with me or anyone else. Is there something going on with you?"

"No, honestly I'm fine. I just have a lot going on right now. Really, we'll hang out soon."

"Okay, whatever you say. Just don't go disappearing on me."

"I won't."

The bell rang for us to go and I didn't even notice Danny or Rita. The next two classes when by quickly and it was time to go home. I got in my car and I noticed what had happened. Danny had become a popular and populars were poison, self centered poison. Populars and non populars did not mix. Danny and I both were aware of that. I didn't want to think about that anymore. I got in my car and drove straight home, not making my routined stop to Sonic for slushies.
