After taking a nap, I lie in my bed thinking about earlier events, wondering if Danny and I were still friends, or if I overreacted. I was thinking about apologizing to Danny, when the smell of chicken and rice distracted my from my thoughts. I decided to call Kelli later and tell her what happened.

"Smells good Mrs. Cooper." I heard Danny say. Danny came over for dinner five times a week.

"Thank you. We're have chicken and rice." My mom responded.

Even though Danny and I had an argument he didn't pass up mom's chicken and rice.

"Ah. Pollo y arroz." Danny said. Two years of Spanish and he thought he was fluent. "Is Riley here?" he continued.

Before my mom can respond, I am already in the kitchen.

"Hey." I said quietly.

"Hey." he started. "Can we tal-"
"Danny!" Jayla interrupted and ran towards Danny. "Are you going to eat with us?"

"Yeah,"

"Yay! Play a game with me while we wait. I have "Guess Who","Monopoly", and we can play charades."

"Okay, in a minute. Can I talk to your sister for a while?"

"Okay, for a minute."

"Okay, Jay. One minute."

*******

"Your sister's quite the comedian." Danny said once we were sitting in his car, away from my family.

I didn't respond.

"Okay," he sighed. "Riley, what's bothering you?"

I chuckled.

"Seriously, Riles, what did I do? What happened? You hurried to leave school and I know you and Rita have this whole 'popular verses unpopular' thing, but what does that have to do with me? Danny asked.

"You were acting like her." I said quietly.

"What?" Danny asked.

"You were acting as if we didn't know each other, like if they knew we were friends they'd forced you out of the group, like you couldn't be seen with someone who didn't look like they just transferred from Beverly Hills Academy. You know that if you join their group," I pause. "You know you can't socialize outside of the group." I said. The words becoming more true when I said them out loud.
Danny looks as if he doesn't know what to say, And from past experiences, I know he does not.

"I'm sorry, I didn't know I came off that way."

I looked in his direction. "I'm sorry too."

"Riley?" he started.

"Yeah?" I replied.

"You're my best friend and Rita Sanders is not going to change that. Just, Don't forget that." he said.

"I won't." I said more as reassurance for myself then to respond to Danny.

"And. I noticed you didn't get a slushy, so." he says and reaches for the cup holders and grabs two slushies. Both blue raspberry. I had not noticed that the slushies were there. "One for you. And one for me." he says handing me a slushy. "One last thing.

"Yeah?"

I doubt Beverly Hills Academy is a real school," he said, referring to my perspective of the populars' appearance.
