Tuesday - SchoolI walked into school at around 8:15. I went to the locker hall to retrieve the books I had left the Friday before. As a strolled down the halls the smell of the cool air and the newly cleaned corridors filled my nose. Apparently someone mopped over the break and the pungent smell of lemons roamed through the halls.
Just as I reached my locker I noticed a note.
Let's see how cool you are when you're not so new. Let's see how cool you are when they find out all about you.
It read.
Just as I had taken the note off my locker, my phone buzzed. I grabbed my books, closed my locker, and unlocked my phone to show a text from Danny.
Where are you?
"Locker hall." I responded.
Stay there.
I waited for Danny in the locker hall. The bell rang and students soon crowded the hallways. I looked through the crowd of people in search of a familiar face. I didn't see him.
"Hey," Danny showed up next to me. "What's that?"
I handed him the note.
"Where did you get this?" Danny said. There was a hint of nervousness in his voice.
"It was on my locker."
"Rita?"
"Most likely."
Danny let out sigh. "Okay, I'm pretty sure whatever she knows it's not," he looks around. "what we know." he continued. "Try to avoid her until we can figure it out."
"Sure thing, but try to calm down. People are going to start to notice that something is wrong."
"Right?" he cleared his throat. "Ready to go?"
"Why not?" Calculus here I come.
------------
5th Period
I walked into Chemistry class. We were still working on a lab so I walked over to the lab table. The first thing I noticed was how cold it was. I pulled my sweater closer to my body. It was getting closer and closer to December and it was starting to become noticeable.
Kelli walked up to the station right before the bell rang so we had a few minutes to talk. "Hey!" She said cheerfully.
"Hey." I replied shivering.
"Cold?"
"Yeah." I laughed.
"I get it. When I walked out of the door this morning I had to run back in to grab my boots. Anyway, you should hang out with us this weekend. We could go ice skating Saturday."
"I can't."
"Riley, every time someone asks you to hangout you can't go. It's like you don't want to hang out with me or anyone."
"That's not it at all!"
"Then what is it!"
The problem was Kelli was so inquisitive. She had been since I met her at the diner.
"I can't tell you."
"Are you hiding something from me? I'm one of your bestfriends and you can't tell me?"
"Kelli"
"Whatever, it doesn't matter. Don't hang out with us. Do whatever you have to do."
"Kelli, you are acting like a kindergartener."
"I'm acting like a kindergartener? You are the one keeping secrets. Not me."
"Well, maybe this is something I just can't tell you. Why can't you understand that?"
"Why can't you understand that I am just trying to figure out if something is wrong?"
"Ladies, take your seats and settle down." Our teacher said after the bell had rung. We took our seats and finished the lab as if nothing had happened. When the bell rang, we walked out without another word.
Between Classes
I walked to my locker to exchange my books.
"Look everybody, it is Maria. If that is your name." Rita called down the hall. Everyone turned their attention to us.
"It is." I responded.
"Okay, whatever you say."
I walked away in an effort to avoid confrontation. Before I could get pass Rita, she extended her foot in an attempt to cause my descent to the cold hallway tile. Instead, my books fell from my hands. I picked them up as quickly as possible.
"Oops." She chuckled.
I stood up and stepped exceptionally close to her. "Look. I know what your doing. I know you want a fight and I know you want me to start it. Wanna know what else I know? I know that I am not about to let my pride make me do something stupid. You'd do the same if you knew what I did. And if you're done trying to embarrass me into something that will get a both into trouble, I have a class to attend." I stepped away from her and brushed past the crowd that was looking for entertainment out of what just happened and continued to Literature before the bell rang.
