Chapter Two
Riley MatthewsI impatiently glanced over at the ticking hands of the clock on the white wall. It was now past my bedtime and Mom, Dad, Auggie, and I were just sitting of the waiting room of the Greenwich hospital, waiting for the doctors to let us go and visit Maya in her room. There was a lot of people here. We have been waiting for over an hour. Thank god it's Friday and I don't have school tomorrow!
I averted my eyes to my nails, which were painted with a pretty, pink polish. I then glanced down at the magazines that were sitting on the table in front of me. None of them seemed interesting. I wish I would've brought my phone because not only am I nervous right now, but I am bored as well.
"Really, Riley?" I thought to myself, "Your best friend just got in a car accident and is unconscious, and you want your phone just because you're bored? That's just awful!"
I looked up from the magazines on the table. I gulped as I nervously glanced around.
"I'm sure they'll let us see Maya soon, Riley," Dad, who was sitting to the left of me, tried to comfort me, understanding why I was so nervous.
"Hopefully!" I replied in an annoyed tone, "They've been making us wait for over an hour now! What the heck is taking them so long?"
I didn't realize what I said was kind of harsh until I looked at the sort-of-shocked faces of my parents. I guess they were surprised because I usually have patients. But oh, no, not when it comes to situations like this!
"Sorry if I sounded a bit harsh or rude," I apologized, "It's just that I'm really worried about Maya and really want to see her, so I'm really impatient right now."
"It's ok, Riley, we understand," Mom sympathized, "We're worried about Maya too."
"Yeah, and you're not the only one who's upset," Auggie began, "I know that she's your best friend and not mine, but I always loved it when Maya came over! I really hope that she's ok!"
Mom, Dad, and I nodded their heads in agreement.
"I hope that she's ok too, Auggie," I agreed as I pulled my little brother into a hug.
My lip started to tremble and tears started to slide their way down my cheeks.
"I hope that she's ok too."
"Matthews?" One of the doctors called as he walked into the waiting room about fifteen minutes later.
"Yes?" Mom, Dad, Auggie, and I all eagerly replied as we all stood up out of the red chairs that we had been sitting in.
"You may see your friend, Maya Hart, now. I'll take you to her room."
The doctor then pushed a white door, which led into a hallway, open. Mom, Dad, Auggie, and I walked through the doorway and into the hallway. The doctor then shut the door and led us down the hallway, which was filled with hundreds of white doors. I assumed that each of the doors had a room for one of the patients behind them. We were halfway down the hallway when we had came upon a door with a clipboard attached to it that read, "Maya Hart". This was Maya's room. After waiting for over an hour, I was finally going to see how she was doing.
"I am sorry to inform you that your friend is still unconscious," the doctor stated as he pushed the door open and led us into Maya's room.
I felt a sense of relief. For a second, I thought that he was going so say, "I am sorry to inform you that your friend is dead."
