Chapter Twenty-Two
Riley Matthews

WARNING: I just wanted to let you guys know that something may offensive to some people is in this chapter. I just wanted to let you guys know that I support everyone and would never ever be mean on purpose.

After Maya had found me at the hospital and we reunited, we decided to go back to my apartment and work on the project some more. After we kissed, we both agreed that we should not let our new relationship ruin our friendship. This basically means that we will still treat each other as we were before. The only thing that's gonna be different is that we'll show even more affection than we already do. I also told her that I still wasn't quite ready, but no longer wanted to hide my feelings. We'll probably kiss each other and go on secret dates, but I told her that I'm not quite ready to come out to the public. Maya said that she's already ready, but she'll wait until I feel comfortable to tell our friends and family— well, if we ever get out of limbo, that is.

"Hey, Riley, I know another thing that I could put on my presentation about you," Maya stated, smirking.

"Really?" I asked as I leaned over towards her, looking at her computer screen. My jaw dropped. On one slide on Maya's presentation, she put, "In addition to that, Riley Matthews is my girlfriend, so if you have a crush on her then don't even think about asking her out because SHE'S MINE!!!"

My heart jumped into my throat when I had read the word "girlfriend". I was going to have to get used to that.

Maya started cracking up as soon as she saw my expression.

"Maya, you promised that you wouldn't tell anyone until I was ready!" I cried.

Maya put her hand on my arm. "Relax, honey, it's just a joke— well, the part about you being my girlfriend isn't a joke, but you get the picture. You know that I'd never do that to you. I'm sorry for making you upset."

I just smirked at Maya. "It's ok," I replied as I turned back around to my own computer and began to make a new slide.

"Hey, what are you writing about me?" Maya asked as she leaned towards me, looking at my screen. She gasped as soon as she read what I was writing.

I wrote, "What Maya said about me is completely false. Ain't NO way I'm HER girlfriend. She WAS my best friend, but not after what she just put on her slide about me! How dare she make ME seem LESBIAN!!! Ew, I'd NEVER date a girl; that's DISGUSTING!!! So, boys, talk to me after class and I'll give ya my number... ;)"

"Riley!" Maya cried.

I started laughing hysterically as I hit the backspace button repeatedly until there was not a single trace of what I wrote left. "Don't worry, Maya, I just did that to get you back!"

"I know, but that kind of hurt... What I wrote about you wasn't mean..."

"I-I'm sorry, I took that a bit too far. What I wrote was mean. Of course you're still my best friend and girlfriend! I love you more than anything else! If I liked strictly boys and you said that you liked me, that's not how I'd react— we'd still be the best of friends! Also, I would never say that liking someone of the same gender is disgusting! That could really offend the LGBT kids in our school. I'm sure it'd even offend some straight people who are in support of gay rights!"

Maya chuckled. "Yeah, you'd get in trouble for putting that on there FOR SURE!!!"

"And lastly, I'd never give a boy my number unless we're just friends and have no feelings for each other whatsoever. You wanna know why? Because I'm already dating somebody."

Maya smirked. "Oh really? And who would that be?" She asked, playing dumb.

I just giggled and bopped her nose. "You, ya silly goose!"

Maya just giggled and then picked me on the lips, which caused my cheeks to turn light shade of pink. "I forgive you," she whispered into my ear.

"F-for wh-what?" I stammered.

"For what you wrote, ya silly goose."

"Oh yeah." I blushed even harder. "I must have gotten sidetracked by a certain someone," I whispered into Maya's ear, "If ya know what I mean..."

Maya blushed. "I-I uh... Maybe we should get back to working on our presentations."

"Alright, peaches," I agreed as Maya and I both went turned back around, facing our own computers.

"Riles," Maya said out of the blue about ten minutes later, "I have a question."

"Yes, peaches?" I replied as I turned towards Maya.

"If we get out of limbo before we have to present this project and you are comfortable enough for us to come out to our friends and family at that point, do you think I could keep what I just wrote on my presentation?"

"What, you mean what you said about me being your girlfriend?"

"Yeah."

I paused for a moment. "Well, I don't know, Maya. There could be a lot of negative consequences to that."

"Yeah, but there's also a lot of positive consequences. I'm sure there would be a lot of people who would accept us and tell us how brave we are for admitting that to everyone in the school."

"Yeah, but the negative ones still exist. What about the ones who won't? What if they bully us?"

"Well, we're presenting at the very end of the year, so we wouldn't have to put up with it for very long?"

"What if we get cyber bullied? Also, we're going to JQA High School next year, so all of the same people would be there. It's not like we're starting off fresh in a COMPLETELY new school. We'll just be in a different part of it. I'm sure that ALL of our classmates will not forget that we told them that we're a couple over one summer."

Maya paused for a second. "True. I'll let you think about it. If you're ever ready enough to do that, then just let me know."

"O-ok, I will."

All of the sudden, I heard the door open. I looked over at Maya's computer and realized that she still had the one slide up. I gulped.

"I hope that they won't be able to see that because someone who's in limbo wrote it...," I thought to myself, "If not, Maya and I have a lot of typing to do."
