On each throne sat a god or goddess wearing different outfits that suited them. Remzor had moved to the outside of the circle with his head bowed slightly. My hand reached for Jays.
"Kristina Ambrosias," one, Zeus, spoke in an authoritative voice.
Cringing at the power that just his voice could make, I let go of Jays hand and swept low into a curtsy. "Zeus."
I felt the weight of his eyes disappear and knew they landed on Jay.
"Half-breed Jay," he said in the same voice.
Following my suit, Jay gave Zeus a bow and said nothing.
"I believe we have some things to sort out," Zeus said and leaned his chin into his hand.
"Yes. We have long awaited this day," Hera said from next to him.
"What's today?" I asked and stared hard at the ground.
"The blood moon. A moon to represent the end of a being and acknowledge the beginning of another," Lucifer said in a bored manner.
"We are correct to assume that some time ago you were warned of a loss. The time for the loss is now," Zeus said.
Lucifer clicked his fingers and we watched as two demons, one being Roman, appeared and grabbed Jay by his arms and necks.
"What are you doing? Let go of Jay!" I yelled at the demons and knocked them over with my own power. I grabbed Jay and pulled him close to me. "Your not taking him away from me," I snarled.
"Are you sure we should take their love away?" Aphrodite asked Zeus.
He glared at her. "Yes. It has been asked and decided by her father. The task continues."
The gods bent their heads at his words and spoke nothing.
"Kristina Ambrosias, give the half-breed to us and we won't meddle with your one last family member, related by blood," Zeus commanded.
I had family? Why hadn't they come to me or why haven't I heard of them until now?
Jay understood the look in my eyes. The want of family to be with me.
I held tightly onto Jays hands and with one last kiss, I slowly let go of him. The demons grabbed him and took him to the side.
"What of his soul? Does it belong to that of Heaven or my realm of Hell? Or should we just toss it to Death?" Lucifer asked Zeus.
Zeus glanced at Aphrodite's concerned face and let out a heavy breath. "His soul can be placed in this."
In his hand was now a ring with a sapphire gemstone that moved as if it were filled with liquid.
He tossed the ring to Roman, who caught it, and everyone except the demons turned away as they hacked and slashed into his skin and bone.
My knees trembled then I fell to the ground in a heap, crying as Jays screams for help were echoed around.
Not even five minutes passed before Roman walked up to me and gave me the ring. I plucked it from his palm and immediately placed it on my ring finger. It's what he would've wanted to do, I thought.
"Now, for our second purpose here. Morpheus, Dionysus," Zues said and two gods bowed their heads.
"Your job is now complete. The town is no longer needed," Zeus said.
In seconds, the town that I could see from the lookout disappeared. The forest disappeared also. It was as if it never existed.
"What did you do? There were people there," I asked.
"Nothing here really existed. Not a person. Not a building. Nothing," Zeus replied.
"Was Jay real then?" I asked softly and in disbelief.
"Yes. His presence was partly crucial. You and he were the only real things here."
I laid my palm flat on the ground and felt the lava boiling under the layers of earth beneath my hand. The ground rose up into a small incline as the lava bubbled higher and higher.
Zeus sighed. "We need to get on with this."
Lava burst from where my hand was and flowed to make a large circle.
"How dare you. How dare you put me through all of that!" I yelled at them all.
With a snap of his fingers, Zeus stopped the lava from bubbling and sent the ground back to normal.
"Now, we will continue. Kristina, you still haven't found out why your father organised all of this with us?"l
"Of course not. Why would he? He's been dead for centuries," I said in a monotone while I sat crossed legged on the ground.
I made a perfect single blade of grass grow instantly from the dirt before I picked from the ground and tear at it into thin ribbons.
I heard Zeus sigh again but my mind didn't register it properly. Nothing mattered anymore. My life was worthless now that Jay was dead.
A teardrop landed on the ground and was absorbed instantly.
"Kristina, please understand that we didn't mean to bring you heartache," Hera said.
I disregarded her words. They were empty words. Words with no meaning.
"Just tell me why your all here," I said robotically.
"Your father made from the almost-extinction of the Immortals to right now, a test. He wanted to make sure that you would do everyone proud as the princess and that you would continue the royal blood line," Zeus explained.
"So this was all a lie and a test?" I asked emotionless.
"Yes," came the reply after a slight pause.
I walked out of the ring of gods and onto the edge of the cliff that overlooked mountains and a river.
In seconds, it all blew up. Water and earth flew into the air. All that was left was a huge crater. A crater full of nothing.
"I know your upset but you must be happy for the young one," Hera said from her throne.
"What are you on about? There's no reason to this life now. It's almost cruel what you did. I had the love of my life and we were happy. Why did you take that away?" I cried as I fell to my knees again. "All I wanted was a happy life. You couldn't let me have even that, now could you?"
"We should take our leave. She wants some space," Hera whispered to Zeus.
"Alright."
With that word, all the gods disappeared. I was alone to wallow in my sadness.
"If it means anything, Jay loved you very much and your father would be glad that the test he made worked. Congratulations, Kristina," a voice said from behind me.
I snapped to my feet to stare strangely at Roman. He was conflicted in his emotions.
He gave me a small smile before finally turning away and disappearing in flames.
Despite the anger towards him when he said 'congratulations' right after he killed Jay, the words he left me seemed almost calming and gave me a tiny spark of hope that something good would happen in the future.
