Part one of the mini Halsey series, based on the song "Coming Down"
Calum yanked on her arm, smiling at her as he lead her down the haunted hallways of the hotel they'd rented for the night. They did this occasionally, when things got just a bit too hard to handle at home - with the yelling and screaming - she'd call him up and they'd escape together. Their laughs echoed around the abandoned hotel corridors, the sound seeming to eerily reoccur. Usually when they rented hotels together the hotels were never popular, the only people apart from them generally just being the staff.
Calum unlocks their room, pulling her gently into it as they collapse onto the bed, him pulling out a cigarette and a lighter and her laying next to him and tracing the ink on his arms. He takes a puff from the lit cigarette in his hand and offers it to her, her leaning forward and taking a breath from the smoky tube. Laying back, she stares at the cracks in the paint on the ceiling, scrunching up her nose as she thinks about the fact that this is all they can afford. It was fine, until she saw the snobby rich kids. But it's all ok, she had Calum and that was all she ever needed. He puts his hand under her chin and lifts it up to meet his eyes.
"You're so beautiful, and I know it may seem bad now - but one day we'll be alright, ok?" He says, looking at her with such sincerity her heart flutters.
"But how do you know that cal? What if it just gets worst?" She mumbles, looking away from his eyes. He presses his lips against her neck, kissing the skin there gently.
"You know, one day we're gonna wake up in a nice room, with white bed sheets and framed pictures of us on our wedding day scattered around the walls. And you're going to shake me awake because I'm late for my very important job and you'll be late for yours because you have to give me a lift as I never did pass my test. But then I'm going to gently pull you back into the bed, and my arms, and remind you that it's Saturday and we don't have to go anywhere. You'll laugh and cuddle back into my chest and I hum some random song to you. Then we'll get up and make pancakes and I'll drink my nice cup of coffee as you cook the batter, but as soon as I finished you know that I'll just come over and wrap my arms around your waist, hugging you from behind making it a very cute scene but also very difficult for you to cook. So you'll push me away and then we'll eat our pancakes on the couch with your legs resting on my lap. Everything will be okay, because it's you and me - it has to be," he finishes, his eyes closed in thought as she looks up at him in wonderment. She kisses him lovingly, her eyes soon closing as she's swept away to unconsciousness reassured that she'll be okay.
The next morning she's sitting up in the squeaky mattress, Polaroid camera in hand. Calum stills lies next to he, sound asleep and oblivious to the fact that she's been taking pictures of him for about 10 minutes.
"You know you're not being very subtle right?" He asks, making her jump slightly as she thought he was asleep. She giggles and lays down next to him, flicking through the pictures she'd taken.
"Yeah I know, but I wanted to get so e pictures because you just looked so cute," she tells him as he entangles her in his arms, resting his head on her shoulder as he looks at the Polaroids too. He smiles and takes them out of her hand, looking through them himself. He suddenly takes the Polaroid camera and aims it at them, taking a selfie of them in bed - her hair messy and his neck covered in love bites left from previous activities, neither of them looking at the camera and instead at each other.
"This," he says, referring to the picture he now holds in his hand, "this will go up in our room amongst the pictures of us on our wedding day.
And that's exactly what happened. Except, before that Polaroid made it into the wall in their shared bedroom, it went up in the hall where the two made vows to each other and promised to love each other forever. And since then it's been in a suitcase travelling the world with Calum as he had to leave her behind temporarily and needed to have a piece of her with him, it's been carried around in her wallet when she first got a job and couldn't stand being away from him for very long without a piece of him. And now it resides plastered onto their wall with sticky tape, right next to their bed as a reminder that Calum was right that night in the haunted hotel with demons screaming in both of their heads.
It did get better.
