A/N: probably the saddest chapter I've ever written tbh
Evelyn
After my conversation with Louis last night, I started to feel homesick too. Even Ella has been feeling it too. The main person I'm missing the most is my grandpa and it's been pulling at my heart. The bond we have is indescribable. He's my best friend.
I remember when I came to him, eyes red and puffy from crying the night before. I told him about Harry and how he broke my heart. And I was so scared to tell him that I was pregnant.
"Tell me, darlin'. What's wrong?" he asked, his voice soothing me.
"I haven't told anyone yet..."
"I'm listening," he said, giving me an encouraging smile.
And then I told him and I felt ashamed. I was not raised like that to get drunk at a party and end up getting pregnant during my senior year of high school. I felt like he was going to be disappointed in me. Instead, he held me close and told me that it was going to be okay.
And I believed him because everything turned out to be more than okay. He stood beside me as I told my family. They were shocked at first, of course, but they were supportive throughout the next nine months and has loved Ella so much ever since.
Abortion was never an option for me. Although I knew I was too young for a child, the thought of doing that broke my heart. Life is so precious and I'm so glad I gave Ella that. I can't imagine my life without her in it.
I grabbed my phone and called my grandpa. After a couple rings, he answered.
"Hello, baby girl," he greeted, softly. His voice made me feel at home.
"I miss you," I said, feeling myself starting to tear up. "So much."
He chuckled lightly. "Oh, honey. I miss you too. Your grandmother and I were just talking about you. How is it over there? And how's Zayn holding up with the company and all?"
"Everything's fine and Zayn's handling it very well. I'm proud of him. But how about you; how are you feeling?"
"I'm getting better and better everyday, sweetie. But who knows when God wants me back home."
"Don't say that. It's too soon."
He chuckled again. "My time is coming to an end."
"Grandpa...don't."
"Evelyn, I miss you so, so much. And I miss my grand babies too," he told me. His voice was quiet and sad. It's making my heart hurt.
"Please don't go without seeing me," I whispered. "I'm coming back soon to see you even if it'll be my last time."
"I promise I'm not going anywhere."
"Can you tell me the story about how you and grandma met?"
"Hm, where do I begin?"
I closed my eyes and listened to him talk. Gosh, I've missed his voice. No matter how many time I've heard this story, I could listen to it everyday. It's the sweetest thing.
By the time he was done telling the story, I was tears.
"Honey, are you crying?" He asked and I nodded even though he couldn't see.
"I just wish I was there with you. You've been there for me through everything and I just want to do the same for you."
"Don't cry for me, darlin'. We'll see each other soon, okay?" he murmured, softly.
"Okay," I nodded, smiling. "I love you, grandpa."
"I...love you too," he exhaled deeply. "Evelyn..." he began wheezing.
"Grandpa?"
My breath hitched in my throat. The other end was silent.
"No, no, no, no!" I cried and repeatedly called out his name but he didn't respond.
My fingers were shaking and my phone slipped through my hands and made a loud thud that echoed throughout the house.
"Ev?" Lauren yelled from the kitchen. I heard her footsteps come near. "What was that sound-"
I saw her and dropped down to the floor and broke down. I couldn't breathe and my vision blurred from the tears. I clutched onto my shirt and cried even harder.
"Oh my goodness!" Lauren rushed over to me. "Evelyn, what's wrong?!"
I couldn't speak. All I could do was cry. I wanted to scream.
"Evelyn, you're scaring me! Tell me what's wrong?" she panicked.
Louis came running in. "What's happening?!"
"I don't know!" Lauren exclaimed, wrapping her arms around me and began stroking my hair as I cried on her shoulder. "Why are you crying, Ev?" she asked, softly.
"G-grandpa," I managed to choke out. "He's gone."
I lifted my head off her shoulder and saw that Lauren was starting to tear up. She knew how special my grandpa was to me and could feel the pain that I was in.
Lauren looked up at Louis. "Call Zayn, now!"
Louis pulled out his phone from his pocket and left the living room to talk to him.
That was my very last phone call with my grandpa and my heart is hurting so much.
