Chapter 19 - Let's Reap Your First Soul

Song: Jesse McCartney - Beautiful Soul

-Thanatos-

I sighed into the phone as I pulled my cloak out of mine and Blaine's closet. "I don't know, Dad. I don't think he's ready yet."

"Thanatos, the only reason I let you be Blaine's mentor is because you're his lover and I know you would take better care of him than any other reaper."

I snorted, interrupting my father as he started his rant. "Father, no offense, but I think you highly overestimate my status with him."

He groaned. "That isn't the point, son. What I'm saying is that I didn't give him to you so you could coddle him. He's been an official reaper for almost a month now. If he doesn't reap a soul soon, it won't look too good for either of you."

I sighed. "I know, Dad. I just don't think it's time yet."

He growled under his breath. "Look, I didn't want to have to do this but you've given me no choice. You either take him with you to reap Martha Sandeval's soul or I reassign another reaper as his mentor. Your decision." And he hung up.

I looked at the phone in disbelief. He couldn't possibly be serious.

"He's right, you know."

"Holy hell!" I said, jumping and dropping my phone. "When did you get in here?"

He rolled his eyes at my reaction. "Been standing here since you said you didn't think I was ready to collect my first soul which, by the way, you're wrong about. I am ready. I honestly think it's you who isn't ready."

I snorted. "Why do you think it's me who's not ready for you to reap your first soul?"

"You aren't overly thrilled with the idea of me experiencing the same kind of pain that you have for over two hundred years now. You think I can't handle it. That I'll crack under the pressure of it all." He stepped up to me and wrapped his arms around my waist and buried his face in my chest. "Thanatos, I'm not the same person I was a month ago when you first saved me. I'm not the same scared little boy. I'm not nearly as fragile. I know what I'm getting into and I'm ready for it."

I sighed and picked him up, waiting until his arms and legs were wrapped around me before speaking. "Baby, you don't understand. Martha is going to be very reluctant and probably a dirty fighter. She didn't even know about the contract. Honestly, I don't want you mixed up with her or her son, whose soul I'll be taking in a couple days," I said as I looked at the calendar hanging from my wall.

Tuesday, September 15, 2015. The day Martha Louise Sandeval is to die due to a botched assassination attempt. Another day for screaming, crying, and biting, all of which Blaine will be witnessing. Hell, if him and my father have their way, he'll be right there in the middle of it all.

Blaine grabbed my head in both of his tiny hands and forced me to look down at him in my arms. He silently stared into my eyes for a second. Just when I thought he was going to just sit there staring, he pulled me closer and kissed me. When we pulled away from one another is when he decided to finally speak.

"Thanny, I'll be fine."

I rolled my eyes at the ridiculous nickname he had given me. "Why do you insist on calling me such a weird name?" I asked as I put him down.

He propped his hands up on his hips and pouted at me until I handed him his cloak. He immediately began stripping and I turned my back to him to do the same.
