-Thanatos-
"Are you ready for this, Blaine?" I asked him as the two of us put our cloaks on and got ready to leave to collect Ethan's soul.
He sighed and nodded. "Yeah, as ready as I'll ever be."
I let out a slow breath and motioned him over to my side. He came to me and I wrapped him up tightly in my arms. "Are you sure?"
He scowled at me. "Why are you suddenly doubting my abilities?"
I sighed in frustration and shook my head, picking him up and leaning my forehead against his. "Baby, I don't doubt you. I just have this really bad feeling that Ethan is going to be a very dirty fighter."
"That's what you said about Martha, Thanatos," he pointed out in annoyance.
"I know, I know. But this time I'm really on edge. I have no idea what will happen today. Hell, the guy didn't even care that he didn't know whose death warrant he was signing when he made the deal with me."
He rolled his eyes. "Thanny, I highly doubt many of the people you deal with actually care about that, okay? I know what I'm getting myself into. I know what's waiting for me when we get there. I know this isn't going to end well. I know that. What I need from you is simple. I just need your faith in me and your love. Can you give me that and support me through this?"
My heart stuttered in my chest at this. My love? Did he even realize what he was asking? God, I hoped so.
I nodded numbly. "Yeah, you've got it. Whatever you want or need from me, you've got it."
He grinned broadly and pecked my nose. "Good. Now, let's go."
I nodded and placed him on his feet, that nagging feeling still gnawing at the edges of my mind. After all, he didn't know how badly the elders had screwed him over. The soul we were going after had signed that contract with me only a few weeks ago and he gained two measly days. Good thing he didn't know how badly he was getting jipped either. That wouldn't have ended very well. In fact, it still probably won't end well.
We both summoned our scythes and were soon consumed by the black mist only reapers possessed. This day was definitely going to be very interesting. To say the least.
We arrived at the scene just in time to see the medics cut Ethan's body down while shaking their heads. As I had already known, they arrived too late. Ethan's soul now belonged in the Realm of the Dead instead of in his mortal body.
The soul of the target sat in the window seal across from his body, swinging his legs back and forth in a carefree manner as he watched what used to be him being removed by the oblivious mortals sharing the same room as us. He looked up at us and smiled wistfully.
"You know, when I signed that contract, I thought I would be gaining time, not losing it."
I shrugged a shoulder carelessly. "You did gain time. Just not as much as you expected."
"And in return, I lost my mother."
I shrugged again. "Not my problem. You're the one who signed the contract knowing good and well that you were signing another's death warrant. In fact, you didn't even care whose life you were ending prematurely."
