Chapter 8 ~ Why Aren't You Afraid?

"From the moment you saved me."

Well, fuck.

"How?"

He looked at me like I was insane. "Surely, you didn't think I was so stupid as to think you were human. . ."

I blushed a bright shade of red. I had never even thought of him connecting the pieces like this. I thought he would just remain blissfully ignorant.

I looked away from him. "No. I really didn't even think about it," I admitted.

He snorted. "Typical."

I gave him a questioning look.

"You just had to be like everyone else and assume I was completely oblivious to everything around me."

 I felt my jaw drop. He blamed me? It's not like I did it on purpose. It's not like I intentionally neglected the possibility of him connecting everything. I never even thought of him knowing any language other than English.

"I'm sorry. I honestly didn't even think about it. The possibility of you knowing any language other than English never even occured to me," I muttered.

He rolled his eyes and crossed his arms over his chest. "Yeah, yeah."

Wow. . . Where was all of his sass coming from all of the sudden?

Where was all of this confidence coming from? I didn't even know this guy, yet I was being a total smartass to him. If he really wanted to, he could hurt me and shut me up permanently. But he didn't. I wonder why?

 "Why aren't you afraid?"

"Huh?" That caught me completely off guard.

He groaned and slapped his forehead. "Why aren't you afraid of me?" He repeated.

I shrugged. "I've lived with a complete monster for the past eight years. Why should I be afraid of you? Besides, I've been wanting the eternal sleep you can grant for so long."

I felt my jaw drop. He wanted to die? But why? I know his life wasn't the best in the world, but it could get so much better. Okay, so maybe the whole death wish thing wasn't exactly new, but it still surprised me how he could admit something like that so casually. . .
