chapter one →
You could say that Darcy liked the silence, she wasn't the type to talk much either. She was more an observer, always watching other people and their actions in combination with their body language. It was almost like their facial expression and body language could change her thought on people.
But even though Darcy is the 'silent' type, she hated the rough and cold silence of waiting. The pressure of waiting was almost annoying. Darcy sighed and stared at the clock right in front of her.
Fifteen minutes had passed and Darcy was too naive to walk away after ten minutes. Luke wasn't there and so Darcy was alone, in a rough silence, waiting. She had called Luke eventually, annoyed by why he wasn't there. She was wondering if he had just forgotten or if he didn't care about a good grade. After a while of ringing, Luke finally picked up.
"I'm sorry I'm late! I had something to do but I'm on my way right now!" He spoke in to the phone. Darcy felt a sudden adrenaline kick and got up, got her bag and spoke in to the phone. "Great, make sure that when you get there, to close the window and turn off the light." She hung up and walked out of the classroom.
Darcy wasn't the type of girl to do such thing, but something in the way that Luke treats her changed it. Almost as if she had to be this extrovert near him. She walked down the long hallways, she knew Ashton would be there waiting for her. He always is, he insists on driving her.
Once she got out, she spotted the black Range Rover Evoque. Once she opened the door, he looked up at her and smiled. "Hey Ash." She sat down and looked at the entrance of the school to see Luke running out of the big doors.
"Hey babygirl, you're early." He smiled and kissed the top of her head. He then started the engine and drove off, Darcy tried to stop thinking about Luke but the thought couldn't leave her mind; did he forget or was he just hooking up with some kind of slut in the janitors closet, because that's something he would actually do. He had done it before, so no real surprises.
"The dickhead decided to not show up, so I got up and left." Darcy spoke and Ashton chuckled, "That's something you wouldn't do, but okay then." He then laughed. There was a comfortable silence for the rest of the ride.
There were texts streaming in, all by Luke. Darcy didn't feel like reading them. Luke has this special kind of way to get her to feel guilty. It wasn't her fault, he should've just shown up on time. If he did try to make her feel guilty, she would be stuck with a pit in her stomach the whole weekend.
Once they got home Darcy dropped her bag and walked over to the kitchen to get something to drink. "Hey Darc?" Ashton said while walking in. Darcy looked up at Ashton who was walking in with his phone in his hand. "Yeah?" She asked him and he then looked at her, "Mike and Cal just said they'd come over and game, I thought I'd let you know." He smiled. "Oh, okay, I'll be mostly upstairs doing my homework anyways." She smiled and started walking out of the kitchen.
"Okay mum said she'd be home around seven, so she's making diner." He said. Darcy said a quick 'okay' and then walked up the stairs with her drink and her bag. When she got in to her room she closed the door and put her stuff down. She then opened her laptop and turned it on while she grabbed the books she needed out of her bag to do her homework and she started doing it before her brother's friends would come over and take away the calm vibe.
Around thirty minutes later, the doorbell rang and she heard Ashton saying hi. Not soon after, she heard the usual soft yells and cuss words coming from the gaming room downstairs and she was happy she had finished her homework before.
It was still light and so she sat down in the sitting area next to her window as she stared out of it, looking through the neighborhood. There were a few people passing by here and there and several cars driving past. The neighborhood Darcy, Ashton and their parents lived in was a pretty well-known neighborhood. Probably because it was where all the rich families lived, the lawyers and company owners. She was devastated because of the fact that was how people saw her.
Not only her, also Ashton. They saw Ashton and Darcy as the rich kids with expensive clothing and five cars. But there was actually so much more than that. They had a personality, and they were happy they had a friend group that knew that.
Darcy got up and walked down the staircase and in to the gaming room. "Hey Darcy!" Calum yelled and smiled, she smiled back and saw that it wasn't his turn, since Michael and Ashton were holding the controllers.
"So how was tutoring Luke?" He asked her and she sat down next to him, laying her head down on his shoulder. "I don't know, he didn't show up." She laughed and Calum looked at her. "He's just an asshole." She sighed. "Are you sure, you don't even know him well." He said and she sighed, "He has a pretty big reputation, remember?" She laughed and he nodded. They looked at how Michael was going crazy at Ashton. Darcy's soft giggles and Calum's chuckles making the volume even higher.
Darcy then heard the door open, and she got out of Calum's half-grip on her shoulders. "Calum, let go." She whimpered and he did, she got up and saw her mother walking in and over to the kitchen. "Hey mum." She smiled and followed her mother.
"Oh, hey Darcy." She smiled back at her and then started unloading the groceries. Darcy started helping her and she thanked her. "So, Liz told me you were tutoring Luke. Why didn't you tell me?" She said and Darcy's eyes widened.
"I-uhm, I thought that if I told you, you'd say I couldn't. Since I know you don't really like him." Darcy started saying. "Neither do you!" She laughed and Darcy nodded. "Yeah, I know. But Miss Edgar would give me extra credit and I really want it." Darcy sighed.
"It's fine, I'm happy you're busy with extra credit, but if you're studying at their house or ours, no bedrooms." She said and eyed Darcy. "Of course, I actually wanted to just tutor him at school, no complications." Darcy said and nodded.
Then, loud yells and cheers sounded from the gaming rooms, making Darcy and her mother both laugh. "Are Michael and Calum both over?" She asked and Darcy nodded. "Help me prepare diner?" She asked.
While they started preparing diner, the gaming room was still not a quiet place and the three boys were loudly cussing and yelling at each other. "So Ash, how're ya feeling about Darc' tutoring Luke Hemmings?" Michael asked Ashton, making Ashton glare at him. "It's not like I'll praise her for doing it, but she really wanted the extra credit. I did make her promise she'd keep it in school, though." He said. "I don't get how you like the kid, Cal." Ashton sighed and threw his controller at him, signaling it was Calum's turn.
"He has this really cool side, you know, and he can hook you up with basically every girl." He laughed and the other two boys quickly after too. "Well I don't need help with my hook ups, especially not from Hemmings." He laughed.
After a while, they stopped talking about Luke and they moved on to the next subject. "So are you guys going to the party Maxwell's throwing?" Michael asked his best friends and Ashton looked at him, "Wait? Maxwell?" He said. "Yeah, he asked us. He, uh, actually asked if there is any way we could make Darcy come along." Michael grinned, Ashton furrowed his eyebrows. "Wait, that was five years ago, is he still crushing on her?" Calum asked him and Michael nodded.
"Maxwell's a great kid, Darcy mentioned him once. But she hates parties so much, even more than she hates Luke Hemmings." Ashton laughed and Michael and Calum soon joined in. "Who hates Luke Hemmings?" Darcy asked while walking in and looking at the three boys sitting on the couch.
"You." Calum laughed and they looked at Darcy, wondering what she was doing. "Dinner's ready." She sighed and walked back out. The boys turned off the XBOX and then walked out of the room, towards the diner table. "Hello Ms. Irwin." Calum said once he saw her walking in with a bowl of lasagne in her hands.
"Hello Calum, Michael." She smiled and sat down on the table. "Well enjoy your food." She smiled and then sliced parts and gave everyone a piece.
"So, boys, it's Friday night, what are you guys doing tonight?" Darcy and Ashton's mother asked. Ashton looked up and smiled. "Maxwell is throwing a party, you should come too, Darc." Darcy furrowed her eyebrows and looked at Ashton. "Maxwell O'Neil?" She asked and Michael nodded. "Yeah, and I heard that he'd like it if you'd came." He said.
Darcy blushed, because she had a crush on Maxwell ever since two years ago when they had to do a chemistry project together. But she never thought that Maxwell would remember her. "Uh.." She trailed off, she wasn't really the girl that liked parties. She actually never went to one before. But if she could see Maxwell, she'd go.
"Okay, I'm coming with you guys." Darcy said and smiled.
