Ava's P.O.V

Walking into the dimly light room my warm body was brutally embraced by the cold air. My breath painfully caught in my throat when I shuffled forward seeing his battered face. The majority of his head was rapped in bandages only leaving his swollen black eyes and busted lip free. He laid fast asleep yet his features weren't relaxed they showed the amount of pain he was in.

Taking my arms I used it to embrace myself as I looked at the sleeping man before me. The call came in an hour ago thankfully after I had already dropped the girls off to school. "Mrs.Johnson." Someone's soft voice said which caused me to finally look away from the battered man that laid before me. "Hi." I answered as politely as I could manage throwing a weak smile her way.

"I'm Doctor Carley and I've been looking over your father- in- law for the past few hours." She informed me keeping her dark brown eyes glued to her clip board she held in her slightly shaking hands. "Mr. Johnson was beaten up pretty bad. Six broken ribs, a few concussions, bruised lung and some internal bleeding. If he wasn't rushed to the hospital when he was I'm afraid he wouldn't have made it." She said finally looking up at me with a sad smile.

She was pretty young which most likely contributed to her nervousness. Her mocha skin tone contrasted with the boring white coat she wore with her name written in blue cursives. "Thank you very much Dr. Carley." I said quickly throwing a worried glimpse over my shoulder when I heard Brent shift uncomfortably in his sleep. "It's okay he's on strong pain killers which would help with the pain somewhat. I must say that I've heard quite a lot about your family since I moved here I just didn't know that you were...," she dragged out a shy smile spreading across her features as she looked down at the shiny white floors.

"Black." I finished her sentence which caused her to nod unsurely to my statement. Honestly I'm shocked that whoever she heard about my family from actually forgot to mention that very important part. Usually it would be the first thing they'd mention when they decided to talk about me. The only thing I saw as a benefit of this was that they never made any rude statements about the girls, always gushing about how beautiful they were. And I was extremely grateful I never wanted my children to be exposed to such negativity.

"You're quite the looker though no wonder you were able to snag a rich white man." She commented giggling while I forced a tight smile to her comment. When people look at my relationship with my husband it seems all they see is his money and the things he's able to buy with it when in reality that didn't make Bentley anymore appealing to me. I love him because of who he is as a person not because he has an impressive number behind his name in the bank. Yet that's all the people of this town saw me as 'a gold digging whore who by luck happened to get pregnant," there words not mine.

"Ava-Marie." Ryan said coolly from where he stood in the doorway. "Ry." I said guiltily putting on my best innocent face I could muster. "I'll leave now it was nice meeting you Mrs. Johnson." Carly said before exiting the room before I could reply to her statement. "Why do you always find a way to get into trouble?" Ryan grumbled before plopping down in a vacant seat in the corner of the large room. "They called me what was I supposed to do leave him here to suffer?" I retorted feeling myself getting worked up over the subject.

"Ava-Marie we both know that when Bentley finds out that you're here and that you paid his medical bill he is going to go ballistic. How much was the bill?" He asked the one question I was hoping nobody would ask at least not now. "A lot." I mumbled looking down at my fingers that knotted together instinctively playing with each other. "I'll prey that he doesn't kill you if I were you I'd do the same." He said laughing lightly at my pain obviously I saw nothing funny about the situation.

"It wasn't that much. And it's not as though he can't afford it." I muttered it felt more like I was verbally trying to convince myself that Bentley wouldn't have a problem with me spending the money on his father and not Ryan. "Maybe but I think you're forgetting who's laying on the bed behind you Ava. Obviously the hospital called him first and he ignored the call." He said softly which was true. I never understood Bentley's relationship with his father and I don't think I ever will yet that didn't mean I would allow him to lay here and suffer when I knew I could help him.
