Happy reading xx
-Alyssa's POV-
I took down the last picture frame hanging on my wall and placed it into the box. I glanced at the picture and sighed before sealing the box.
I stared at my now empty room. It used to be full of pictures which defined my passion for photography.
"Aly, are you ready?" Mom called from the doorway.
"Yeah. Let's go."
"I'll go get your sister." She smiled.
I understood that moving would be better for both mom and I but it doesn't feel right. It feels like part of my life is missing. This place was where memories were made, this place was where I grew up, this place was home. But, I would do anything just for my mom to be happy again. Just so she can move on.
I carried my suitcase down the stairs and placed it into the boot of mom's car.
Suddenly, I tripped over something on the floor. I looked down and saw our dog, Cocoa, laying flat of the porch.
"Hello there." I cooed and picked her up. She licked my hand in response.
I carried her into mom's car and placed her in her cage.
Slowly, I drifted off to sleep.
*******************
"Lyssa we're hereee!" A cheerful voice squealed, waking me in the process.
"Alright Jen." I laughed.
Jenna Taylor. My baby sister. The only one I had left.
I stepped out of the car and towards our new home. The house looked pretty run down with cracked pillars, chipped off paint from the walls and a layer of dirt covering the porch. It would turn out really nice if someone would to put effort into it. It was a big house.
"Uhh, mom?" I called.
"Yes sweetie?"
"Did you get the right place?"
"Yes I did. I'm getting it renovated soon." She reassured.
Why didn't you renovate it before we moved in? Jeez.
I fiddled with the door knob and it broke off. God damn it. The door squeaked as I opened it. The squeaking became louder as the sound echoed off the walls of the empty house.
This was not how I expected it to be. There was an old chandelier, on the verge of falling- hanging in the middle of the living room.
"Mom? When are you getting this place cleaned up?" I asked staring at the huge spider crawling up the wall.
"Right now. But, renovations start first thing tomorrow morning. So, start cleaning!" Mom ordered.
I laughed and grabbed a broom.
"Cocoa, come in." Jen cooed.
I walked over to the front door and saw Cocoa barking. What the hell was she barking at? There's no one here except Jen, Mom and I.
"Lyssa, Cocoa doesn't want to come in." Jen said.
I grabbed Cocoa and brought her in but she kept barking and biting me.
"Okay, if you like the outdoors that much, stay out there." I said and walked back into the house, Jen trailing behind me.
******************
After 7 excruciating hours of cleaning, oiling the rusty doors, sweeping and moping every square inch of this house, it was finally decent. God bless there was a hardware store down the street.
We got a few supplies to fix the broken doorknob and temporarily replace the floor panel.
"What do you mean its not here yet?" I heard mom yell into the phone.
"It better be here by tomorrow." She hung up.
"What's up?" I asked.
"The moving truck isn't here. It won't be here till' tomorrow." Mom said and rubbed her temples.
"We just have to sleep in the extra sleeping bags in the car."
"Yeah alright. I'll go get them."
I placed my sleeping bag onto the floor of the bedroom I chose and laid in it. I sighed and looked around. This isn't home. Was the only thought running through my mind. Sleep welcomed me with open arms as I drifted into it.
*******************
I jerked awake all of a sudden. There was a layer of sweat coating my forehead, my heart was beating hard against my chest. It's just a nightmare. I checked the time on my phone. 3.14 am.
Fuck. 3 am. That's when all the bad things happen.
Just on cue, my bladder started screaming for release. I ran to the bathroom. The light switch didn't work. I furrowed my eyebrows in confusion. We just fixed it.
Great. Just great.
Suddenly, I felt something or rather someone watching me. I turned around and saw nothing. It was nothing but pure darkness.
