Chapter twenty-three.

The vacation had started the temperature became higher the days got longer and the birds started singing again. It was Saturday afternoon and Darren and I were lying on our back in the grass in my backyard. The weather was beautiful and I almost had the urge to change into my bikini but I did not. Darren and I were going to the movie this evening while my parents were going to visit my aunt. They would take us to the cinema and pick us up after the party. Which had benefits for all of us, they didn’t need to stay at the party for that long which they were grateful for and Darren and I didn’t have to cycle. Not that I had really minded though. ‘Where are you thinking about?’ I hear a voice beside me and look right into Darren’s eyes when I turn to his voice. ‘Nothing really..’ I say as I smile at him. ‘Not even about me?’ he says teasingly. ‘I thought that would be obvious so there wouldn’t be a reason to mention it’ I try to say in a serious voice. ‘I’m surprised’ I raise one eyebrow ‘Of what’ ‘that after all those acting lessons you had you still can’t act’ ‘You’re so mean!’ it was true though. Darren forced me to come with him to acting lessons because he said that it was going to be nice. I have to admit it was quite fun but I think the main reason for that was more that we could do kissing scenes all day since the teacher knew we were a couple. Anyway it had been fun but after a while I just decided to don’t come along anymore but hey he can’t blame me I’m just not the “theatre girl” I’m just me. ‘I’m not mean’ Darren says after a pause In which he probably was thinking about the same as me. ‘Prove it’ I say as I look at him. He nods and leans closer to me as he presses a soft kiss on my lips. ‘You taste like strawberry’ he mumbles against my lips and I smile ‘That’s called lip balm’ he starts to lightly suck at my lower lip ‘I like strawberry’ ‘Oh do you?’ I whisper. ‘Don’t act like you don’t know’ he whispers back. I rest my forehead against his and our noses touch lightly and I giggle. I move and lay my head on Darren’s chest. After a while I close my eyes and listen to the sound of his respiration when I suddenly feel something wet drop on my head. I open my eyes to see if it’s raining but the sky is a perfect shade of light blue without any clouds.  I must have imagined but then I feel it again. I look at Darren who has dark spots on his shirt. ‘Did you feel that too?’ ‘The water you mean?’ ‘yes’ I say ‘I thought I was going crazy’ he says smiling. I look around the garden and suddenly realise where the water came from. ‘Sprinklers’ I mumble. I stand up and see my sister standing behind the window in the living room and I give her a confused look. I now feel something wet on my back and turn around to see all the sprinklers are on now. I turn back around and see my sister smirking while she’s sticking her tongue out and I nod my head disapprovingly. I make a high pitched noise as I suddenly am lifted of the ground. My eyes widen as Darren walks towards the sprinklers. ‘Oh no!’ ‘Oh yes’ he says laughing and he increases his pace. ‘Put me down!’ I yell at him. ‘As you wish’ he says and puts me back down with my back towards the sprinkler. I just want to start to yell at him when I freeze as I feel cold water against my back and in less than 5 seconds I am soaking wet and my wet shirt sticks to my body. Darren smirks as he stands in front of me. Still dry of course. A mischievous glint passed my face but it's gone as quick as it came and is almost unnoticeable. I run through the sprinklers so that now my front is wet as well. ‘Come on Dare give me a hug’ I say smiling as I walk in his direction. ‘No no I don’t think so’ he says as he takes a few steps backwards to create more distance between us. I make a small move in his direction and that’s when he runs away. I smile and run after him. I grin as I reach him ‘Running is more my thing than acting’ I say smiling ‘at least the running is good for something now’ I say as I hug him and wet his shirt. I smirk as I grab his hand and pull him with me under the sprinkler so he is now wet as well. ‘Much better’ I say as the water drops slowly flow down my chin and land on my shirt. I run a hand through my hair which is wet as well and try to wring the water out of it which is absolutely useless since we’re still under the sprinklers. The jet loses power and slowly stops spraying. And there we are standing in the backyard clothes and hair all wet.

After Darren and I both changed into dry clothes – yes he has clothes at my house- we all settles down in the kitchen for dinner. We ate spaghetti and Darren and I shared a knowing look every now and then. After dinner my mom and dad got ready for the party and Darren, Emily and I watched some TV.

‘We’re ready’ my mom says as she comes down the stairs in a black dress wearing black heels and her hair hanging loose on her shoulders. Darren and I both stand up leaving Emily alone on the couch. She is not going to the party. After my mom and dad said goodbye to her we settle in the car, Darren and I in the backseat my dad in the driver’s seat and my mom in the passenger’s seat. ‘So are you two excited for the party’ I say teasingly and get a groan from my dad as answer. ‘Sorry I had to’ I say smiling. After a few minutes of silence I ask my mom to turn on the radio which she does. I hear Darren humming along softly beside me and smile as I listen to it. He stops when he realises I’m looking at him. ‘Don’t stop’ I whisper and lean my head on his shoulder and giggle softly as his hair tickles my noise. The ride isn’t that long so after a few more songs we arrive at the cinema. ‘Bye’ I say to my mom and dad. ‘We’ll pick you up after the movie’ my mom says as she turns around in her seat. ‘Thanks’ I say and smile at her. ‘Bye dad’ ‘Bye’ he says ‘Bye Mr. and Mrs. Smith’ Darren says. ‘Darren how many times do we have to tell you that you can just call us Sarah and John’ she says and smiles. ‘Thanks, Bye Sarah, John’ he says and gets out of the car. I wave as they walk away before linking my arm with Darren’s.

After we got our tickets, popcorn and some drinks we take our seats and wait until the movie starts. The commercials start and I hear some irritated sighs every now and then when there is yet another one. I feel something against the side of my head and see Darren smiling out the corner of my eye. ‘You’re throwing popcorn at me?’ I say while turning to him and raising both of my eyebrows. ‘What me?’ he says in an innocent voice. ‘Yes you mister’ I say. He looks at me and throws another one. ‘Dare’ I say a little too loud causing the people in front of us to turn around and make a shh-noise. I mouth a sorry at them but then turn back to Darren throwing a handful of popcorn at him and I stick my tongue out at him. ‘Bo you’re such an ass’ ‘well what are you then’ I say as I snap my fingers at him while grinning. ‘Me? I am adorable’ he says ‘Aren’t I?’ he says and leans over to kiss my cheek. ‘see?’ ‘You’re such an idiot’ I say smiling ‘But an adorable idiot’ I say and pop some popcorn into my mouth. The movie passes by in a blur since Darren and I are only paying attention to each other much to the annoyances of the other people in the cinema. The film had come to an end and I get my phone to call my mom and ask if she’ll come pick us up. ‘Hey’ ‘Hey Bo’ my mom says. ‘Film ended?’ ‘Yup’ I say ‘Good’ she says and I can almost hear her smile. ‘We’re coming’ she says ‘Bye sweetie’ ‘Bye mom’ I say and hang up. I turn back to Darren ‘They’re coming’ he smiles. ‘Great shall we head outside then?’ ‘Yeah’ I answer and smile as I feel Darren’s hand lightly brushing against mine as we get up. We wait outside for about 10 minutes and then I see a familiar silver car which I recognise as our car. I lightly tug Darren with me and we settle in the backseat. ‘Hey’ Darren and I both say at the same time and everyone laughs. ‘so how was the party?’ I say grinning. ‘You better not talk about it’ she whispers giggling while looking at my dad. ‘What did I miss?’ I say as I look at him. ‘Nothing’ he mumbles eyes fixed on the road. It falls silent and I look out of the window as we wait for the traffic lights and as they turn green I feel the wheels slowly starting to move again. We pass the crossing but suddenly I see bright white lights coming much closer than I prefer them to be. Time slows down. I watch in horror as the other car comes towards us as dad futilely tries to manoeuvre the car away from it. I tear my gaze away from the window unable to look at it anymore. I look to Darren his eyes are filled with shock. I hear a loud bang and then the car hits us on the front left side. It feels as if time stands still and the only thing I hear is a loud scream which was not coming out of my mouth. The glass of the windshield shatters. I hear another scream but I don't know where it's coming from. I can't think properly and my thoughts are just one thick knot. Mom, dad, Darren........ I feel something grabbing my hand and holding it tight I squeeze the thing and it squeezes back. I hear a really soft voice but can't hear what it's saying. I hear it again and then I finally can make out what it's saying. My name.  'Bo' I hear a weak voice coming from my left saying. my head throbs but I recognise the voice. Darren. I try to answer but there's no sound coming out of my mouth. My vision starts to blur and everything goes black.
