Lindsey watched quietly from the doorway as Carol packed her case. As she threw her clothes about, Carol told Lindsey exactly what she thought of him. “You’re a bastard, Lindsey Buckingham. Stevie is right about that. You don’t deserve me. I’m too good for you and you know it.” Lindsey, trying very hard to stay calm, balled his hands into tight fists and clenched his jaw. He was determined not to let his anger get the better of him, for once in his life. In the three years that he had been with Carol, he had done horrible things to her when she had done nothing wrong to provoke him. This time Lindsey knew it was his fault, and he knew that Carol didn’t deserve to be on the receiving end of his anger. Carol was suddenly in front of him; she looked so different when she was squaring up to him. In that moment, Carol reminded Lindsey of Demi. Demi was so sure of herself. On the day they met, she had seemed so shy, just like Carol. But Lindsey got on the wrong side of her… and regretted it. Lindsey looked down his nose at Carol, locking his eyes with hers. “I’m leaving Lindsey. And I’m not coming back.” With that, Carol walked past him. After a few seconds, the door slammed downstairs. Lindsey sank to the floor as he heard Carol’s car speed off into the night. “Fuck.” Lindsey whispered in despair as tears rolled silently down his cheeks.

Demi woke up as someone shook her gently. Her eyes fluttered open; Stevie smiled gently down at her. “Hey. How’re you this morning, sleepyhead?” Stevie asked. Demi smiled weakly. “Okay.” Hesitating, Demi took hold of Stevie’s hand and said, “Was it a dream?” Stevie smiled and shook her head. Demi groaned, covering her face with her hands and turning away from Stevie. Stevie lay down next to Demi and pulled her back around. “Demi, it was bound to happen soon. Carol Ann has been asking for it for ages. She’s just such a… A drip. Lindsey needs someone stronger and someone who’s sure of themselves. Like you.” Demi smiled gratefully at her new friend. She sighed, looking around the room. “Where did I fall asleep at?” She asked. “Well, you sorta passed out downstairs. But you woke up and we both fell asleep here, in my bedroom. It was all kinda like a sleepover!” They giggled together at Stevie’s excitement. After a few seconds, Demi asked, “Stevie, if you don’t like Carol with Lindsey, why are you trying to set me up with him?” Stevie smiled. “Because I know I can trust you.” “What do you mean ‘trust me’?” Stevie clasped Demi’s hands in her own. “I can trust you with Lindsey’s heart.” They smiled at each, their friendship flourishing with every second.
