12. Alpha Tension

"I still don't think Erik wants me to come," Josh argued through the phone. I was coming down the stairs, arguing with my beta over the phone.

"I've already talked to him about it," I lied. I was about to talk to him, so I was being completely dishonest.... Well, maybe I was, but that didn't matter.

"Ask me about what?"

I slammed into Erik's chiseled chest as soon as I hit the last step.

"Kass, alpha hearing. Now what is Josh talking about?" Erik asked me with his serious alpha voice. Normal wolves would have cowered at his tone but I was his mate and an alpha as well. He didn't scare me. I quickly hung up the phone and glared at Erik.

"Well, if you must know, your sister would like to see her mate tomorrow, at the party but she's scared her big brother will tell her no." I took in Erik's reaction. He seemed to be debating the idea in his mind. "I know my dad, Grace, Violet and Dale are invited. Why can't Josh tag along?"

He bit the inside of lip. I know how protective he can be of his little sister but this is something he can't keep her from.

"No," he stated in his alpha voice. I narrowed my eyes.

"No?" I questioned. "Erik you can't-"

"I can, and I will. Fuck, I'm the alpha around here and I will chose what's best for my sister. Learn your place Kassidy!" It seemed that he grown over a foot and was towering over me. He still didn't scare me. I laughed in his face which only seemed to make him madder. To be honest, I was pretty livid as well.

"Listen here, Mr. Alpha," I spat the last words with as much venom that I could muster. "As much as you would like to think that you can control me, you are mistaken. I am an Alpha, same as you. I put up with this bullshit from my dad for years and I will not take it from you. Just because your voice can get a bit deeper and you're a bit stronger than I, doesn't mean you have any power over me." I took a quick breather before starting again. "Not to mention that I am your mate, your equal." His eyes were livid and I knew mine had shifted to gold with my anger. "Now, I'm going to go for a run. You need to go chill out and explain to your sister why Josh can't come. But keep in mind, that if my Dad would have been this protective, I wouldn't be here now."

"Maybe that would've been best," He yelled as I pushed around him and made my way out the door. Before he could stop me, I sprinted into the foliage.

How could I have been so foolish? He's no different than any other alpha male. Cocky, arrogant, controlling. Ugh. All I want to do is go back to Timber and leave this place. Why did the moon goddess ever think this would work between us?

I rushed through the trees, letting their claws cut into my skin. The short stings of pain from the sharp briars was a welcome relief to the pain that was engulfing my mind. I thought I could trust him.

"Kassidy!"

I whipped around to see a flustered Logan running after me. I stopped allowing him to catch up with me. My chest heaved, but not from running. I knew that my tears were close to spilling and my breath was hitching. A set of warm arms wrapped around. Not my mates, but comforting all the same.

"You know it's his Alpha," he whispered against my hair. I clung to his shirt.

"Yes, but I can control my Alpha whenever someone makes me upset. Why did he have to say that?" I answered him lightly.

"Well, to be totally fair, his wolf is pretty frustrated at the moment. If you get my drift," he answered with a slight chuckle.

"I don't get your drift," I replied, confused. He smiled down at me.

"There's a bit of sexual tension between the two of you, and it sets his wolf on edge. Same as it does with most males. We just can't help it." I nodded at his explanation. I mean, I had felt it, obviously, but it didn't seem to have that much effect on me. At least I wasn't in heat.

"That's still not an excuse," I scoffed into his chest. I sniffled as he let out a short breath.

"No, it's not," Erik answered from behind me. His strong arms wrapped around me as Logan released his grip. After a slight struggle, I gave into to his pulls and turned to face him without meeting his eyes. "Kass-"

"Don't 'Kass' me!" I shouted, finally meeting his eyes. "You treated me like every other Alpha Male has treated me. Like a subordinate! As if you have power of me!"

"Kassidy, I know-"

"No, you don't! You have never had to deal with what I deal with ever time I try to negotiate with elders or other packs! Just because I'm a girl!" I had pulled out of his grip and surprisingly, he didn't have anything to say. "Erik, I want to make this work, I really do. But I'm still an Alpha and nothing can change that. It is in my blood. You can't just get mad and pull the Alpha card every time we disagree!" He was still silent. "Not even if you're sexually frustrated." He cracked a smile.

"Point taken," he breathed out and stepped toward me. "But to be fair," he continued, I let him wrap his arms around me and pull me to his chest before burying his face in my neck. "You make it extremely difficult not to get frustrated. Mentally and physically." I was partially aware of Logan leaving us before I felt Erik's lips against my skin.

"Erik," I protested, weakly pushing him away. His lips stayed against my skin and I knew that I was close to losing myself in his kiss. "Erik!" He reluctantly pulled away from me and met my eyes.

"Love, I told you, it kills me not to be close to you," he argued while brushing a stray hair from my face. I grabbed his hand, running my fingers over his palm, before placing it on my face again.

"You think you can just kiss me and I'll forgive you, just like that?" I inquired. His Brows knitted before he spoke.

"I've already talked to Josh. He and Olly are coming to the party with your father tomorrow. I spoke with Hannah and we have come to an understanding about her and her mate. And I thought that we had reconciled," he explained. "But if you don't want me to hold you," he started as he pulled his arms from my waist.

"No!" I protested, jumping back toward him and into his arms. "I mean," I gathered my composure under his gaze. "Please don't let me go, please." My wolf was getting the best of me as she whimpered my plea.

"Never," he answered huskily before leaning down and softly placing his lips on mine. I hungrily accepted his kiss, wrapping my arms around his neck and granting his tongue entrance to my mouth. The kiss was sweet yet passionate all the same. I melted into his touch, only to be rewarded by him reacting the same. "We have to stop," he breathed out as my lips moved toward his neck. "Kass, I'm not going to be able to control myself."
