Chloe's feet wouldn't fit comfortably under the table with the box still there, so she kicked it gently and then looked up to everyone. No one else seemed to notice it; she kicked it again. The thud sounded after the box returned to the ground. Melanie exited the room and then Margaret followed shortly after. They were all upstairs, it was the perfect time to investigate.
She jumped out of her seat and dropped to the floor, her cereal bowl almost fell off the table, but Chloe steadied it before knocking on the wood beneath the table. Thud. Thud. Thud. It was hollow.
Chloe studied the ground and then knocked on it again; was it possible that the floor was nothing more than a couple pieces of wood and then what? Another floor? Another house? A way out? She looked up just as Jacob entered the kitchen; their eyes met and then he turned around and hurried away. Chloe glared at the empty space he used to maintain; he was hiding something. She ran after him and then knocked on his locked door.
"Jacob," Chloe called out and then awaited a response. But one didn't come. "Jacob, open up." She hit the door again and jiggled the knob violently.
"It sucks being on the other side of the door, doesn't it?" David said before heading down the stairs. Melanie walked past Chloe, so did Margaret. They both acted as if she wasn't even there. Did everyone hate her so much? The one question that stuck in her mind.
"Jacob," Chloe shouted before the crying reached her eyes. Collin must've been put down for a nap. She slid down the wall in the hall on the other side of the door and waited, it was only a matter of time before he would come out wanting help to keep the baby calm and quiet. The screaming died down quicker than possible. "Jacob," She whispered before hitting the door hard again. "Jacob!"
The door in front of her opened up; Jacob was standing there, cradling Collin in his muscular arms. "What do you want?"
"We need to talk," She told him; then Chloe slipped into his room and sat on the edge of his bed. He closed the door before joining her, waiting for her to start the discussion. "What are you sorry for lying about?"
"Don't you already know?" Jacob asked, his voice shakier than ever. Chloe looked to him, he was on the verge of tears. He handed Collin off to her and then led her to the door by her arm.
"Let me go," Chloe fought, tugging against his grip. "You can't avoid me forever."
"I can try."
He shoved her into the hallway, her head slammed into the doorframe, and then Jacob shut the door and locked Chloe out. She stumbled to keep her ground, making sure that Collin didn't get injured. After she felt her way down the hall, Chloe made her way down the stairs, descending them cautiously so she wouldn't slip and fall. Collin stopped crying halfway down and then Margaret took accepted him in a handoff and took him to the kitchen for feeding.
Chloe reached into her pocket and flipped the key over in her pocket, studying the feel of it for keepsake. David looked to Chloe but then averted his eyes before she met his gaze. He still hadn't gotten over his problem with her, and she had a feeling he wouldn't any time soon. The room turned ten degrees colder after he whispered into her ear. "Go see Jacob."
"I don't want to see Jacob," Chloe whispered back before gaging the room. Luckily, no one had heard her. No one knew she was talking to the man, the enemy.
"Go see Jacob," He whispered again, egging her on to do what he ordered. Chloe turned to the camera on the fridge and shook her head in disagreement. She wasn't going to do his bidding anymore; he wasn't deserving of her service.
