"Desperate times call for desperate measures," David started after he wiped his mouth with his sleeve. The kitchen was cool, colder than any of these rooms ever had been. It wouldn't be long before their breaths would fog up and be visible; Chloe rubbed her hands together under the table to keep them warm. "Collin has been taken from us, and I'm afraid that he won't be returned. Our losses are unfortunate, but we still need to focus on the goal." He nodded towards the table and all of their eyes fell to the floor beneath it. The trap door mocked them silently; Chloe wanted to tear the floorboard apart and wreck the kitchen, but she knew not to. She knew it wasn't worth her third and final strike. "I think we should go down there tonight, together and figure out the rest as we go."
"What about the locked door?" Jacob asked.
"We'll break it down, we'll do whatever we have to."
Margaret tsked and shook her head; Chloe looked up to her and waited for her explanation. Their eyes met, she was on the brink of tears. "It's just a trick. It's only going to make things worse."
"What's worse than this?" Chloe asked, balling up her fists. "Death? We already know it's coming one day or another." Margaret shook her head again, but Chloe could see Jacob nodding in agreement out of the corner of her eye. "We can either stay here and keep pretending for him, or we can do whats right and think for ourselves for the first time in forever."
Chloe stuck her arm out into the middle of the table, and Jacob did too. "For us," He stated. Their eyes met for a moment, and they shared a brief smile with one another before turning to David, knowing he would join them in their conquest. It wasn't long until he did.
"For us," David said, his hand on top of Jacob's. All eyes were on Margaret. She wiped her eyes and then placed her hand on top of the pile. "We're going to get out of her, I promise."
