Chloe sat up in her bed, sweat doused her in a thick layer. She paced back and forth from her bed to the door, wishing the camera wasn't following her every move. The key in her pocket moved up and down as she pushed it with her finger. Someone walked down the hallway, making the floorboards creak, and then the room became silent again. Chloe continued her movement, back and forward, swaying side to side with each step until someone knocked on her door. She waited a moment before opening the door, inviting Jacob and Collin into her room.
"What do you want?" She hissed.
"I can come back at a later time," He replied, giving her a dissatisfied look. She was being quite rude, and he couldn't figure out why.
"No," Chloe told him. "I won't be any better later." She locked the door and then sat on her bed, patted the space beside her, and waited for him to sit down next to her. "What do you need?" She asked as he sat down on the edge of the messy bed.
He shrugged his shoulders. "I just thought it would be nice to talk, but I have a feeling that you might need someone to comfort you."
"I don't need comforting."
"Are you sure."
"Yes," Chloe retorted before standing up and exiting her room. Collin's fussing reached her ears after she was halfway down the stairs. If only she hadn't swung the door so hard, then it wouldn't have banged against the wall, and the baby wouldn't have started screaming, in fact, he probably wouldn't have even woken up for at least a couple more hours.
"How are you this fine morning?" David asked as Chloe took her seat at the kitchen table and stomped her feet onto the ground. "As far as I can see, you're a ray of sunshine this fine Sunday morning."
"Yeah," Chloe replied with a bright smile. "Wait, how did you know it's Sunday?"
"It says so in the paper," David replied. "They finally gave me a new one." He glanced to the camera on the fridge and nodded a thanks to the other side; Chloe gave him a questioning look, but David ignored her. Jacob did too after he entered the living room with the now calmed down Collin.
Chloe wanted to apologize, but she thought better of it. She hadn't really done anything wrong; they had all slammed their fair share of doors, it was about time she joined the club.
"So," Margaret said, joining everyone else at the table. "When should we talk about," She glanced to the camera and then finished with, "Collin's sleeping arrangements. I don't think it's fair for Jacob to always have him around."
"Well," David replied. "Collin can't have his own room." He looked to Jacob, and he nodded in agreement, leaving a baby alone in this place wasn't the smartest thing. Chloe realized how many times they had already done so before; she vowed to never let it happen again.
"He could room with me for two days," Margaret said. "Then go to Jacob for two, and then to you for two." Her gaze went to Chloe before saying, "And then the cycle could start over again." Even though Chloe didn't appreciate her attitude, she understood her worry over Collin being alone with her.
"Should we possibly check the room?" Chloe asked, making sure not to say anything suspicious. She looked to David and waited; he nodded. Jacob bumped Chloe's leg under the table; then he bobbed his head up towards the ceiling.
Chloe excused herself and then waited in her room; Jacob followed her a few minutes behind. After he shut the door, he pursued her and then embraced her with a warm hug and kiss. Their lips locked together for several moments before pulling apart.
"What are you doing?" She asked.
"I'm tired of all this," Jacob told her. "I want to forget this place, forget everything that's happened. All the mistakes I've made." He wrapped his arms around her and pulled her back in for another round.
Jacob carried Chloe over to her bed, and then locked her door before joining her. They continued on with their frisky activities. His shirt came off, and so did hers; she stopped him as he began slipping his jeans off.
"I don't think I'm ready for this."
He buttoned his jeans back up. "That's okay," Jacob said; then he ran his fingers through her hair. Chloe leaned back on her pillows and watched him put his shirt back on before leaving her room. She stared at the closed door for way too long, long enough for Margaret to bring Collin up and hand him off. Surprisingly, she actually left him alone with Chloe. It was a relief to know they were finally trusting her again.
She placed Collin on the bed and laid next to him as he babbled on and on, wrapped tightly in his blanket. Chloe took the case off her pillow and covered the camera in the corner, giving them more privacy than she had had for days. The disappearance of the device made her feel better about the room, it almost looked like a normal bedroom, except there wasn't enough junk lying around for it to be real.
Chloe closed her eyes for a moment to rest, and ended up falling asleep instead.
